CELEBRATING WITH THE GUILFORD NONPROFIT CONSORTIUM

Guilford Nonprofit Consortium is a collaborative of nonprofit organizations in Guilford County, NC that fosters mutual assistance and support. GNC strives to reach these objectives by providing opportunities for education, collaboration, networking, celebration, and advocacy. On November 16, 2023, Guilford Nonprofit Consortium gathered for their annual event at the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame in High Point, to celebrate nonprofits in our community at their annual celebration.

SHIELD Mentor Program, a nonprofit organization focused on empowering youth through mentorship, took home the DMJPS Nonprofit of the Year Award! In 2023, SHIELD Mentor Program's small but mighty team consistently excelled in uniting diverse collaborating organizations, fostering unity, and positively impacting a wide spectrum of young people across Guilford County. SHIELD's noteworthy achievement lies in its pivotal role in orchestrating the Youth Service Providers Collaborative (YSPC), a collaboration among five organizations that established a network spanning over 45 agencies across Guilford County that are continuing their work together. This unified endeavor underscores a commitment to collective action, enhancing the lives of young people while exemplifying the utmost respect for all and sowing the seeds of synergy within the community.

Congratulations to Catena Bergevin, the 2023 Spirit of Service Award recipient! Catena stepped up to play many roles across our community and within the Consortium this year. She helped plant seeds for the Plus Program – a series of workshops for nonprofit managers – that the Consortium will introduce in early 2024 in partnership with Goodwill Industries of the Triad and Business High Point/The Interchange. She also has led the charge in creating and growing the Guilford County Community Centric Fundraising cohort that is exploring new ways to center social justice and equity into fundraising practices.

NEW PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE LOADING...

The Public Art Endowment of Greensboro would like to announce its latest sculpture collaboration with Cone Health. Cliff Garten, an internationally recognized sculptor, unveiled his final design for a sculpture Corous for the Moses Cone Hospital Campus on November 1, 2023. This sculpture, funded by the Public Art Endowment Trustees of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro and Cone Health donors, will be placed in the green space between the Women’s and Children’s Center and the Heart and Vascular Center of E. Northwood Street. The sculpture is now in fabrication and is expected to be installed in the Summer of 2024!

Cliff says, “I have always thought of form as volume and containment. This is equally true of the places I make in public that are containers for public activity (including this place) and of my illuminated sculptures as containers of light, both sunlight and colored LED light. Corous, like the physiological sections of a heart, is also a vessel. We peer into its open form and can read our own image on the mirror of its surface. Corous is 12 feet tall and occupies a new plaza I have designed in the center of the roundabout entry to the Hospital. It is made of 3/8” stainless steel rods that are welded to two stainless steel plates that are mirror polished on both sides. The separation of the rods make the volume open to gathering sunlight during the day and LED colored light in low light and at night."

Garten is founder of Cliff Garten Studio in Venice, California. With a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Landscape Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design he and his studio are known for creating public places that thoughtfully integrate sculpture with landscape.
