You will notice on the news that we are experiencing hotter-than-ever temperatures in many parts of the country. While it might seem cliché to remark on this fact, it's important to recognize that during these hotter months, there is an increase in the sales of hoses, sprinklers, and watering cans. Business owners might respond with a predictable "tell us something we don't know."
However, this presents an opportunity not to be missed. Rather than letting your summer sales take a backseat, it's time to get creative. First, ask your sales rep about low-water plants. These plants, once established, can handle a day or 2 between watering once established. Next, consider organizing sections in your nursery or business to display mulch alongside those hoses, sprinklers, and watering cans. Catch everyone's attention with signage encouraging them to save water.
Mulch is an essential addition to any garden or container. Its benefits are numerous: it cools the soil and plant roots, retains moisture effectively, attracts beneficial insects and worms, and even invites birds and other creatures to explore. Additionally, the fresh, rich appearance of mulch enhances the overall look of the garden and is pleasing to the eye. The scent of fresh mulch might even transport you mentally to a serene trail in the Pacific Northwest.
Lastly, here's a simple and effective tip: instead of letting cold water run down the drain while waiting for the tap water to turn hot, capture it in a small bucket or container. You can then use this water for plants near the back door or on the patio. Although it might initially feel like a chore, you'll be amazed at the amount of water you save and the positive impact it has on keeping everything green.
With these tips, your customers will not have to sacrifice having a lush garden in the hottest months of the year.
