New Resource Guide: Cultivating Law and Medicine Partnerships to Support Justice-Involved Individuals with Substance Use Disorders

The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) is working in partnership with leadership from the National Judicial Opioid Task Force, a working committee of key judicial leaders, as well as addiction psychiatrists, the Conference of Chief Justices and the Conference of State Court Administrators, to create a variety of resources. The most recent is an educational guide for judges and other justice-system stakeholders on the basics of the medical perspective of substance use disorders. Available at no cost, the guide provides a foundational level understanding of the medical aspects of substance use disorders and the evidence-based practices needed in prevention, identification and treatment. COPE Announces Winners of the Medical Student Curriculum Challenge: Innovative Learning and Teaching About Substance Use/ Opioid Use Disorders

The Board of Directors of the Coalition on Physician Education in Substance Use Disorders (COPE), an ORN partner organization, is delighted to announce the winners of the Medical Student Curriculum Challenge: Innovative Learning and Teaching About Substance Use/ Opioid Use Disorders. This ORN-funded initiative challenged medical students to utilize their knowledge and creativity to design learning resources related to the development of the knowledge, skills and attitudes critical to providing care to persons with substance use/ opioid use disorders. LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER: FAVOR Recovery Ambassador Training for Alaska, Oregon and Washington (6/8/2021 - 6/10/2021)  Faces & Voices of Recovery (FAVOR) invites you to a free virtual training sponsored by ORN. The Recovery Ambassador Program is a 13-hour training that prepares individuals to advance public understanding and appropriate responses to addiction. The training program consists of a two-day seminar. Course material includes instruction in participation on advisory councils, recruiting volunteers, building messages, organizing community action, engaging policy makers, raising money and renewing team effort. Opioid Regulations: State by State Guide  The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has developed a state-by-state guide on opioid regulations. This resource was created for the purpose of providing practical, state specific information for emergency physicians that prescribe opioid medications in an emergency department setting. This guide includes: PDMP mandates; accessibility by delegates of the physician in order to comply with those requirements; CME mandates; community availability of Naloxone and Suboxone; limitations on days’ supply of a prescription originating in the emergency department; and availability of community treatment resources. When your child is prescribed opioid pain relievers: What you should know/ Cuando le prescriben analgésicos opioides a su hijo: Lo que debería saber The Partnership to End Addiction has created a new ORN-funded Spanish language resource to support families whose children have been prescribed opioids for pain management. The free resource provides a list of questions family members should ask prescribers. Anyone can access this free resource. Submit a request at OpioidResponseNetwork.org.

Health Privacy Laws and Protected Health Information Trainings  Cicatelli Associates (CAI) is coordinating ORN-funded trainings on protected health information for states nationwide seeking to address common questions around health privacy laws and their application in practice. Trainings can be provided virtually for up to 90 minutes and will include case studies and other interactive features. News Updates Since the Last ORN Bulletin

Biden-Harris Administration Calls for Historic Levels of Funding to Address Addiction and Overdose  The Biden-Harris Administration submitted to Congress the President's Budget for fiscal year 2022. The Budget invests an unprecedented $41 billion in public safety and public health approaches to address addiction and the overdose epidemic, including significant increases for prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. Within the budget, more than 57% of all requested funds are for demand reduction activities, a category that includes prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery. Read more.

NIDA Leaders: Extended-Release OUD Medication Formulations Could Improve Adherence  Following a strategy that has proven effective for improving adherence to other medications, leaders from the National Institute on Drug Abuse say the key to improving retention rates among patients receiving medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder could be extended-release formulations of buprenorphine. CDC Launches Drug Overdose Website in Spanish  Drug overdose continues to be a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Overdoses related to prescription or illegal opioids claim the lives of 136 people every day. See and share the CDC's new Spanish-language website. Read more.

HHS Announces $3 Billion in Funding for SAMHSA Block Grants to Address Addiction, Mental Health Crisis The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is distributing $3 billion in American Rescue Plan funding — the largest aggregate amount of funding to date for its mental health and substance use block grant programs.
