Greetings & Happy Holidays!
I know it’s been a busy Fall leading up to the Winter Break. I'd like to take a moment and provide a progress report on the New HQ project.

Construction Update

Demolition is still underway (you can hear the ka-thuds and ka-thunks each day) and will continue over the break for anticipated completion by Jan. 1. New construction will begin as soon as permits are issued in early January.

Furniture Update
The furniture package is in final review by the AISD Furniture Committee, and the furniture vendor will be selected this month. In January we plan on having a sample workstation staged in CAC for viewing and feedback.

Here is a listing of the furniture mock-ups:
  • Assigned workstation layout – includes a 6 X 6 ft. workspace with personal storage;
  • Unassigned workstation layout – includes a 5 X 5 ft. workspace with daily storage;
  • Typical task chair options; and
  • Typical huddle layout – a 10 X 12 ft. footprint with personal storage, a white board, a sit/stand desk, and an adjacent meeting table with chairs.
Employee Engagement
We have formed a dedicated  New HQ Move Committee to guide the physical transition to the new HQ. Committee members representing multiple departments are focusing on topics related to the move, including communications, emergency management, sustainability and records retention. The Move Committee is developing a  New HQ Employee Moving Guide  and  New HQ Employee & Building Guidelines  that will be shared with everyone to help support a smooth transition.

Beginning in January, expect your Department meetings to include HQ news from the Executive Team and Committee.
Day Care Option
The district is looking into providing a tuition-based day care option for AISD staff. One option is providing care at the Anita Uphaus Early Childhood Center, a state-of-the-art facility in southeast Austin at 5200 Friedrich Lane, approximately 2 miles south of the New HQ.

As an AISD early childhood dual language school for students in Pre-K and kindergarten, this space offers a prime opportunity for infants and toddlers. Having this Uphaus day care option for AISD families would allow for an easy transition into Pre-K.

Let us know if you are interested in this day care option by taking this very brief survey, here.
Adjusting to Change
The New Year will bring increasingly detailed information as decisions are made and as construction progresses. Your feedback and questions have been very helpful and your comments and questions to date have been considered and some have been incorporated.

If you have a question that hasn’t been asked or answered, please send to

Thanks for listening, and we’ll talk to you in the New Year.
