Breast Cancer Awareness Early Detection, Lasting Protection
By: Racquel H. Dozier | Founder Lupus In Color
Every October, a light shines on breast cancer awareness. Not just to honor those affected, but to empower women with knowledge and action. Understanding breast cancer is the first step in protecting ourselves and supporting those around us that may be affected.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. These cancer cells might form a mass called a tumor. The tumor can grow and invade and destroy healthy body tissue. The exact cause of most breast cancers are unknown, but researchers have found things that increase the risk of them. Risks that have been seen are hormones, lifestyle choices and things in the environment. Healthcare professionals know that breast cancer starts when something changes the DNA inside cells in the breast tissue.
After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the US. Early detection is critical because if found early breast cancer is treatable. Understanding the risks, knowing your body and staying on top of screenings are essential in protecting your health.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and Symptoms of breast cancer may include but aren’t limited to:
- A breast lump or thickened area of skin that feels different from surrounding skin. A nipple that looks flattened or turns inward.
- Change in color of breast skin.
- Change in size or appearance of breast.
- Peeling, scaling, crusting or flaking of skin on breast.
- It’s important if you find a lump or any changes in your breast to make an appointment with a healthcare professional.
Why Breast Cancer Awareness is Important
Awareness goes beyond personal health. It empowers communities to support research, education and access to care. By talking openly about breast cancer, sharing information and encouraging regular checkups, we can help save lives.
Pearl of Prevention
They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is significantly true when dealing with breast cancer. A simple but powerful habit is to perform monthly breast self-exams. Coupling this with staying on top of mammogram scheduling can have a big impact in detecting cancer early.
Action Steps
Today, take a small yet meaningful step towards empowering yourself on your health journey. Set aside a time for a self-exam and check with your doctor to see when you need to schedule your screening. Remember small steps today can create a big impact for your tomorrow.
Gentle Reminder
Knowledge is power and action can bring answers and hope. By staying informed, caring for your health and encouraging others to do the same, you can become a part of a community committed to saving lives. Together, through small steps we can make a huge impact against breast cancer, one action, one person, one life at a time.
