New Challenge Launched to Support Healthy Aging

Finalists will Compete for Prizes Worth up to $200,000

The Massachusetts eHealth Institute at MassTech (MeHI) is seeking digital health startups from across the U.S. to compete in the Massachusetts Digital Health Sandbox Challenge Program. The first Challenge is aimed at finding unique digital health solutions that improve the lives of older adults and help them remain active, productive, independent, and socially connected.

MeHI launched this Challenge to discover digital health solutions that can help older adults live as well and independently as possible in their homes and communities by supporting their physical, mental, and social health.

Up to eight finalists will be selected to participate in the program and compete for prizes worth up to $200,000. Selected entrepreneurs will participate in a two-month, virtual introduction to the Massachusetts digital health ecosystem program.

Sandbox Success Story: Leuko

For cancer patients, one of the most serious side effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy and targeted cancer therapy is neutropenia—a decrease in neutrophils, the most common type of white blood cell and the most important cell needed to prevent bacterial infection. Leuko is developing the world’s first portable, non-invasive white blood cell monitoring device to screen for severe neutropenia.

In May 2020, MeHI awarded $60,000 to Leuko to work with the MIT Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR) to test and validate their solution. The grant enabled Leuko to test their PointCheck™ device with untrained operators in a simulated home environment, helping to prepare them for a clinical trial and FDA certification.
