Last month I attended the F.H. Council of Homeowners Association meeting. One of the topics was a presentation by SiFi Networks, the company that will be installing and operating a new fiber optic network throughout Farmington Hills (and Farmington). Here are the takeaways that I shared with Heritage Village residents.
Background: The purpose of the project is to offer an ultra-high speed internet service (2 Gig/2000 Mbps) to all homes and businesses city-wide. Think of it as being similar to the AT&T Fiber internet service that was recently installed in some areas of our subdivision.
Installation and Service: New conduit containing the fiber lines will be buried at a depth of 18-24” around the subdivision, however, it will NOT be located in the rear yard utility easement that AT&T, Spectrum, and DTE use…. SiFi Networks says they will bury the conduit in our front yards approximately 18” from the street. This is permitted because the City is allowing SiFi to work in what is known as the "right-of-way", which includes the street plus an area on each side of the street. Our subdivision has a 60' wide right-of-way (so 30' in both directions when measured from the center of the street). Crews will be using boring and trenching equipment to bury the conduit along both sides of the street between small junction boxes, which can be covered by grass. There will also be some locations that get larger junction boxes (typically at natural intersection/split points). They will not be running the fiber lines from the junction box to your home unless you decide to sign-up with their internet provider, which is T-Mobile Fiber.
More Details: For basic information on the project, check out their flyer that I attached. For detailed information, here is the website:

Installation Timeframe and Issues: A specific plan for each area of the city was not shared, however, the SiFi representative confirmed that 9 Mile/Halsted is an upcoming installation area. Any crews with trucks that have "AUI" marked on them are contracted by SiFi. They will place a flyer on your door at least 72 hours prior to working in your yard. Any damage to lawn, sprinkler systems, driveways, etc. will “promptly” be repaired, but in case of any issue, call SiFi (888-766-9475) and they will create a repair ticket so it can be resolved.
