"Bringing people and dreams together one home at a time."

"We can't thank you enough for seeing us through the buying and selling of three properties!  Highs and lows, you kept us calm and we did it!"
~ Charles and Betty Reece

Our home is our refuge, where we retreat away from the hectic world around us.  When first moving into a new house, there are some things that need to be done, so we can really settle in and make it feel like home.  A good cleaning and checking for household hazards are great places to start.  Locating important things like the breaker box, hot water heater, etc., is a great idea as well.  With some sensible planning and a well thought out checklist, making the move into your new home can be a lot less stressful.

Move-In Checklist

When moving into a new house, there are some things you can do in order to make it feel safe and like home.  Here are some ideas of where to begin.

1.)  Do a walk-through. - Identify and rectify hazards, such as unsecured rugs and electrical cords.  Anything that could cause a fall.

2.)  Change dead-bolt locks on all exterior doors.

3.)  Locate water shutoff valve. - So you can find it in case of an emergency.

4.)   Test all smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. - You might want to go ahead and replace all batteries.

5.)  Make any immediate lighting needs. - Replace burned-out bulbs and plug in night lights where needed, such as a poorly lit staircase.

6.)  Make a fire-safety plan. - It is a good idea to learn your new home and have multiple means of exit and one meeting spot.

7.)  Buy fire extinguishers. - Place a multi-purpose fire extinguisher on every floor and one in the kitchen, where most fires start.

8.)  Test circuit breakers. - To avoid circuit overload, plug in radios or lamps and switch off one circuit at a time so that you can tell which receptacles are connected to the same circuit.  Label each breaker box switch accordingly.

9.)  Clean - Clean windows and floors, steam-clean carpets, thoroughly clean bathrooms, freshen up the fridge.
