Davita Chandal is growing up in New York in the 1930s and 40s, facing a rapidly changing world. At school, she wrestles with questions of faith and equality, while at home her parents attempt to embrace Socialism as a means to combat everything that has personally gone wrong in their lives. As Davita struggles with her own identity and place in this shifting spectrum, her tale explores all the questions of a girl growing up during and immediately after the Depression, while also reaching deeper, reflecting on the necessary choices--and sacrifices--we all must make as we grow older.
