New I-39/U.S. 20 interchange celebrated in Rockford

IDOT, local officials and community leaders gathered Oct. 25 to celebrate the near completion of the $98.8 million reconstruction of the Interstate 39 and U.S. 20 interchange in Rockford. The interchange is part of a larger, $302 million multiyear project to improve the I-39 corridor in Rockford.

 

The project, which features two new ramps that connect both directions of I-39 to and from U.S. 20, improves safety, reduces congestion and enhances quality of life while creating jobs and long-term economic opportunity for the region.

The $93.5 million project to reconstruct a new interchange at Interstate 55 and Illinois 59 near Joliet and Shorewood opened to traffic in early October. The project, made possible by the Gov. Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program, converted an interchange with partial access between I-55 and Illinois 59 to accommodate full access in a diverging-diamond design to enhance traffic flow and safety throughout the area.

Region 3, District 4: Resurfacing and other improvements are underway on Washington Road/Peoria Street (Illinois 8/Business U.S. 24) between Legion Road and Zinser Place in Washington. The $4.4 million project will reduce the road to one lane in each direction, with resurfacing expected to be complete by the end of November and sidewalk and traffic signal upgrades finished in the spring.

Region 5, District 8: A $6.73 million resurfacing project has begun on Illinois 13 between Illinois 4 west of Tilden and Illinois 153 in Coulterville. Illinois 13 will be closed to through traffic in the work zone during the project, which is expected to be completed by late December. A marked detour will direct traffic going north and south of the construction zone.

Letting Update

 

Nov. 8 is the final letting for statewide construction projects that are scheduled in 2024. Here are some dates to note in advance of the letting.


  • Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m. Joint venture cutoff (three contractor limit. Date for these groups who want to bid can do so).   
  • Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. Request for authorization to bid cutoff (Final date for contractors who are authorized to bid on contracts). 
  • Nov. 8 at noon Letting (Bids can be submitted until 11:59 a.m. on the day. Bids are shut down at noon).
