New-Indy Catawba Receives Approval for Steam Stripper Construction Permits

Last month, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services Bureau of Air Quality (BAQ) approved Air Quality Construction Permits for New-Indy Catawba to move forward with the construction of an additional foul condensate steam stripper. A steam stripper removes volatile organic compounds and other contaminants from the foul condensate generated in the paper-making process by using steam to strip out impurities.

The permits were issued after the agency reviewed the mill’s applications, applicable state and federal air quality regulations, and comments made by the public, including at a hearing on June 13.

The existing steam stripper will remain as a backup system to strengthen the mill's ability to manage unexpected events. New-Indy Catawba is believed to be the first facility in the industry to use two steam strippers. Construction is on pace to be completed next year.

The BAQ authorized the construction of a new foul condensate steam stripper that will increase the disposal of contaminants generated during the paper-making process.
