The New-Indy Catawba mill site originally opened in 1959 and became a New-Indy subsidiary in 2019. It is a world-class paper manufacturing mill located on the Catawba River that makes lightweight linerboard that is important for packaging.

Additional Odor Sources Confirmed

Ride-along Video Confirms the Existence of Non-New-Indy Odor Sources

New-Indy Catawba significantly reduced its odor emissions in late 2021 and air monitor reports have been consistently negligible ever since. New-Indy suspected that there were additional odor sources in the region contributing to odor complaints, so the mill engaged a local environmental specialist group to sample locations near potential additional odor sources. New-Indy’s “dynamic monitoring” assessment has yielded results that can be viewed in this video chronicling the process.

Since New-Indy began its dynamic monitoring program in June 2023, nearly two dozen elevated hydrogen sulfide readings have been detected in areas north of the mill, including a sample of 2,030 parts per billion (ppb) in July on River Road in Indian Land. The 30-minute exposure limit set by the EPA is 600 ppb and the 14-day exposure limit is 70 ppb. Wind conditions were calm, and odor was detected while air sampling was conducted. New-Indy’s on-site monitors never exceeded a reading of 4 ppb that day.

New-Indy Catawba Community Engagement Group Inspects Upgrades During Mill Tour

The New-Indy Catawba Community Engagement Group (CEG) conducted its final meeting of 2023 earlier this month and observed the mill’s many upgrades during a tour of the facility. The group saw the now-fully-operational Aeration Stabilization Basin with all 52 aerators running and the Equalization Basin from which all legacy solids left by the mill’s previous owners had been removed.

The group also toured Sludge Pond 4 where solid waste is dewatered and interned, on-site air monitors that were recently installed, and the post aeration tank, through which treated wastewater is returned to the Catawba River.

The tour concluded with a trip to the mill’s woodyard so that CEG members could ask questions about the new black liquor spill containment system and see the recently constructed foundation for the new steam stripper that is set to come online in 2025.

Monitor Report

Hydrogen Sulfide Monitors Continue to Show Low Readings

Hydrogen sulfide readings at New-Indy and in the surrounding community have been zero or negligible for well over a year.

The 24-hour averages for hydrogen sulfide recorded in parts per billion (ppb) in October and for the year to date were minimal – more than 17 times below the 14-day exposure limit (70 ppb) set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

New-Indy Catawba has been monitoring hydrogen sulfide at the mill and in the community since May 2021. Daily reports are generated by monitors and are posted on www.newindycatawba.com

NEW-INDY NUGGET

New Indy's Bluebird Initiative

New-Indy recently built and installed five bluebird houses at Oakdale Elementary School in Rock Hill.

The bird houses, built by New-Indy Mechanical Mastercraft Randy Dingler, are part of a long-time mill initiative to strengthen the bluebird population.
