Project Update
New Intersection at KY 338 and US 25 Opens July 6

The moment you've been waiting for is finally here: The SPUI at Richwood Road (KY 338) and Dixie Highway (US 25) will open Thursday, July 6! Longtime readers of this newsletter may recall our introduction to the single-point urban interchange configuration (also called a SPUI) in a previous issue - but let us refresh your memory.
What's a SPUI?

A SPUI is an innovative design that improves safety, eases congestion, and decreases travel times. (You'll find Northern Kentucky's first SPUI at Burlington Pike (KY 18) and KY 237.) With a SPUI, all traffic moves through a single signal, eliminating the need to wait through multiple left turn signals - for this new SPUI, that single signal system will be on Richwood Road. The map below shows how traffic will move through it.
What does this mean to me?

We love a reader who gets right down to brass tacks! In addition to helping ease traffic congestion, the new SPUI improves safety by eliminating two at-grade railroad crossings at Shorland Drive and Richwood Road. The new configuration also features new sidewalks and shared-use paths. Once the double cross diamond opens (very soon!) the full configuration will create connectivity from the intersection of Triple Crown Boulevard/Grand National Boulevard to Shorland Drive. That’s great news for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists!

What to Know

The new SPUI is set to open Thursday, July 6 at 8 p.m. and replaces the existing at-grade Richwood Road/Dixie Highway intersection. Signage and message boards will be in place to advise drivers of the upcoming switch. Richwood Road will pass under Dixie Highway, while traffic on Dixie moves continuously via a bridge over Richwood Road.

In addition, a segment of Paper Boulevard will close for reconstruction for approximately four weeks while road crews open the new interchange. Business access to the Richwood industrial park will be via the newly-opened Richwood Road or Shorland Drive. You can see how that works below.
And that's not all!

The opening of the SPUI is just the first of two major announcements for the Richwood area. A new double carocross diamond interchange (also known as a DCD, similar to the one at Mt. Zion Road) will open mid-July.
