A Note from President and Founder
Nada Cory
Necessity is the Mother of “Prevention”
new take on the old English proverb, it means roughly, when the need for something becomes imperative, you are forced to find ways of getting or achieving it.

As a new year dawns, we find ourselves more than ever, in search of approaches to create and sustain good health. Our best defense may be unearthed in the wisdom from our proverbial forefathers: We can take control of our wellbeing, boost our own immune system and establish exception vigor.

Routinely, we are in the habit, during a flu season or times of illness, to seek special foods or vitamin supplements that are believed to boost immunity. Vitamin C (highlighted in this issue) and foods like citrus fruits, are popular examples. Yet the design of our immune system is complex and influenced by an ideal balance of many factors, not just diet, and especially not by any one specific food or nutrient. In short, a balanced healthy lifestyle, effectively primes the body to fight infection and disease.

We all love making new commitments, so why not begin our quest to find innovative and creative protocols and modalities that will reignite that survival flame that burns within us? The Joseph P Cory Foundation is unswerving to provide education that empowers us all: mind, body and spirit. As you decide to dedicate yourself to an advantageous new year, we too look forward to reinvesting in our communities, to impact and help you find your best self, in the name of health and wellbeing.

This is going to be a great year! So sign up below, and don't miss a beat!
Vitamin C is one of the safest and most effective nutrients, experts say. Though it may not be a guaranteed cure for the common cold, the benefits of vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.
A recent study published in Seminars in Preventive and Alternative Medicine that looked at over 100 studies over 10 years revealed a growing list of possible benefits of vitamin C.
"Vitamin C has received a great deal of attention, and with good reason. Higher blood levels of vitamin C may be the ideal nutrition marker for overall health," says study researcher Mark Moyad, MD, MPH, of the University of Michigan. "The more we study vitamin C, the better our understanding of how diverse it is in protecting our health, and to living longer."

A Fun Project

Did you know, if you stick cloves in an orange, you can create a very nice smelling air freshener?

This is called a pomander, a ball or perforated container of sweet-smelling substances such as herbs and spices, placed in a closet, drawer, or room to perfume the air or (formerly) carried as a supposed protection against infection.

This was commonly used in "days of olde"; the first aromatherapy!

Florida Honeybells – Nature’s Candy

If you grew up in Florida, residents know about Honeybells, a grapefruit-tangerine hybrid that's incredibly juicy and honey-sweet in flavor. This once-a-year citrus sensation is only available for a few weeks beginning in January.

Note: You will most likely, NOT find "how to grow backyard citrus", in our newsletter. This is a thing of the past... Not you Grandpa's orange tree! We are devoted to instructing our students and communities, on how to be successful with Gardens of Hope; they should be easy and sustainable.

Have fun picking these delights, and try to always choose organic.

Grapefruit/Tangerine Infusion

  • Low in Calories
  • High in Nutrients
  • Boosts Your Immune System
  • High in Powerful Antioxidants

You can make this infusion* at home:

1.     Chop up 2 red grapefruit skins (leave fleshy pulp intact)
2.     Chop up 4 tangerine skins (they add sweetness, and the skins contain anti-oxidant oil)
3.      Cover them with water in a pot with a tight lid.
4.     Bring to a boil and let it simmer for 2 hours.
5.     Completely cool for 2 hours with the lid on, so the vapors can’t escape.

Consistency varies from a thin to a moderately thicker liquid.

You technically have a form of quinine, which is naturally saturated in the rind of the fruit.
Preventatively, you can add several tablespoons to water each day or take straight.
Use (2 tablespoons) as a great sore throat or cough remedy.

So many other uses for the rind, which can be dried out and pulverized to a powder. Check back in the near future at the website, under Nada's Vault, for additional recipes and remedies.

*A drink, remedy, or extract prepared by soaking the leaves of a plant or herb in liquid.
