The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR) seeks highly motivated individuals with a passion for protecting civil rights, to participate in its Spring 2023 internship program. The internships will last a minimum of eight weeks with an estimated and flexible start date of, on or around, January 17, 2023.
DCR Education and Training Unit (ETU) Spring Internship
This internship will offer experience to students interested in supporting a growing state-wide civil rights agency and gaining an experience in education and training. DCR is the division in the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office that is responsible for combating discrimination and addressing hate and prejudice in New Jersey. DCR enforces New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination (LAD), the oldest state civil rights statute in the country. It does so by investigating civil rights complaints and bringing appropriate enforcement actions and raises the profile of important civil rights issues. It also supports the LAD through prevention of bias by providing high quality trainings to the public.
DCR Housing Investigator Spring Internship
This internship offers experience to students interested in learning about DCR’s Housing Unit work and enforcement of the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination in housing to protect the people of New Jersey from discrimination and bias-based harassment in housing. Investigators in this unit investigate complaints in a through and objective manner, including by reviewing relevant documents, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence to determine whether there is probable cause to believe that the LAD has been violated. The intern will report to an investigator in the Housing Unit and assist in these investigations.  
DCR Community Relations Unit (CRU) Spring Internship
This internship will offer experience to students interested in supporting a growing statewide civil rights agency and gaining an experience in public outreach and community engagement. DCR is the division in the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office that is responsible for combating discrimination and addressing hate and prejudice in New Jersey. DCR enforces New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination (LAD), the oldest state civil rights statute in the country. The Community Relations Unit seeks to prevent acts of discrimination and bias-based harassment through education and community engagement and to work directly with impacted communities after civil rights incidents occur. Racial justice, youth anti-bias, and health equity are examples of key program areas. 
DCR Investigations Spring Internship
The employment investigations intern will work as part of a team to investigate claims brought under the LAD and New Jersey Family Leave Act (FLA). The housing investigations intern will work as part of a team to investigate claims brought under the LAD and Fair Chance in Housing Act (FCHA). The investigations interns will (1) shadow party and witness interviews by investigators and summarize interviews; (2) review case files, including submissions by the parties, to ascertain issues and help formulate the investigation plan regarding allegations of discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation; (3) enter relevant information into DCR’s online case management system, NJBIAS; (4) assist in drafting the factual analysis of findings of probable cause and finds of no probable cause; and (5) complete other investigative tasks as needed.
