Governor Newsom Appoints New Chief Deputy Director and State Fire Marshal 

This month Governor Newsom announced two important CAL FIRE appointments – Chief Deputy Director Anale Burlew and State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant. Both appointees have a long history with CAL FIRE that make them well prepared to take on these statewide leadership roles. Read their bios to learn more.
2023 Firefighter Memorial Ceremony: Honoring the Fallen 

"Honoring the men and women of uncommon courage who paid the ultimate price to protect our lives, our families and our dreams,” reads the memorial wall located on the grounds of the State Capitol. On October 14th in a solemn ceremony in Sacramento, 35 names were added to the California Firefighters Memorial, including three CAL FIRE firefighters. Matthew Brabo, Daniel Geary, and Scott Gomes are now honored in perpetuity for their ‘uncommon courage’. You will be forever in our hearts.
From the Field: Riverside Unit Report on Conditions

Every day, CAL FIRE first responders answer the call -- well over 500,000 emergency incidents each year. This includes wildland fires, structure and vehicles fires, medical aids, hazardous material spills, swift water rescue, and more.

Meet American Wood Fibers 

The American Wood Fibers facility, located in Tuolumne County, utilizes fire, pest, and drought-affected timber to create animal bedding products. A CAL FIRE workforce and business development grant supported American Wood Fibers to expand their operation, streamline production, and ultimately use more salvaged timber – helping to clean up our state’s post-fire landscapes while also creating jobs and industry in California.
CAL FIRE Stores Over 40,000 Pounds of Seed for Future Reforestation Needs

The L.A. Moran Reforestation Center in Davis provides a reliable source of quality tree seedlings and seed stock to private landowners and public forests in California. This fall, staff have been busy processing cones and extracting the seeds that will be used in future reforestation projects across the state. CAL FIRE stores these seeds in a zero-degree freezer, also known as the Seed Bank.
Time Magazine Recognizes CAL FIRE and Alert California for Innovation in Technology Use

Have you heard? TIME Magazine has named ALERTCalifornia and CAL FIRE’s fire detection AI program one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023! By utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), CAL FIRE can identify fires that might otherwise have burned unchecked overnight. AI can watch 1,000 cameras across California all at the same time. The program is a partnership with UC San Diego's ALERTCalifornia.

FIRE PREVENTION: Cooking Safety Starts with You 

Fire Prevention Week was October 8-14 and provided an opportunity to highlight critical fire prevention tips in the kitchen. The timing is right, as the holidays are quickly approaching, putting more people in the kitchen where over half of all house fires start. Knowing what to do before or during the chaos can save you a lot of time, damage and heartbreak. 

“Creating fire safe habits in the kitchen will help keep you and your family safe from cooking injuries and ensures you are doing everything you can to prevent a fire from starting in your home while cooking,” Chief Daniel Berlant, State Fire Marshal.

This month, learn more about what it means to be a Registered Professional Forester, a unique qualification required in California to “protect the public interest through the regulation of those individuals who are licensed to practice the profession of forestry, and whose activities have an impact upon the ecology of forested landscapes and the quality of the forest environment, within the State of California,” according to the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, the body who oversees forester licensing.
