Every Monday we will release a new video on YouTube featuring one of music groups that contribute to our worship music!
When I first came to Open Door Churches in 2017 I was assigned to spend my Sunday mornings at Keizer Clear Lake UMC. One of the practices they had in worship was to gather everyone in a circle around the worship space and to hold hands as they sang the last verse of the closing...
Stepping Forward in Faith & Love:
A Letter From the Pastors
Across the Greater Northwest Area of the UMC, churches are discerning a process through which they will step forward in faith and love as they re-introduce in-person gatherings. The Pastoral Team of Open Door Churches has been working with the ODC Board and Leadership of our congregations since early April to identify a process for re-introducing in-person gatherings as part of the many ministries our churches offer to the community. The very structure that allowed the Open Door Churches to respond quickly with our shared resources during the early days of the pandemic—a shared set of resources—make the process of stepping forward much more complex for us than they are for a single congregation.

In our efforts to respond to the sense of urgency to open our sacred spaces that we have perceived among many of our members while also navigating a constantly shifting landscape, the Pastoral Team has kept a set of guiding values before us: Collaboration, Inclusivity, Safety, and Community. In late May, we formulated a three stage process for opening our spaces that was designed both to respond to those urgent concerns and to honor those values.

STAGE 1 of the process focuses on Restoration—simply put, opening our spaces for worship and other in-person gatherings as quickly as possible. We are grateful to those in each congregation who have worked so hard over the past few weeks to prepare our spaces for public worship gatherings. This initial stage of the process opens our worship spaces for public gatherings on Sunday morning, as well as encouraging each congregation to offer space for small group gatherings and other in-person activities as each church determines what can be done safely. In order to allow time for the complex conversations needed to prepare for what is commonly being called “hybrid worship”—the interweaving of live and pre-recorded elements—STAGE 1 requires that worship be entirely pre-recorded. The Pastors are working hard with leaders in each congregation to identify ways that each congregation can add elements to enliven and personalize the worship experience. But this first stage is primarily designed to simply restore in-person community. Each of our congregations is also taking steps to open their buildings for in-person gatherings beyond Sunday morning worship, developing those plans according to their distinctive settings and capabilities.

STAGE 2 of the process focuses on Contextualization—identifying aspects of worship and other gatherings that can help those participating regain a greater sense of the distinctiveness of their chosen congregation. The Pastors are actively engaged in conversations with lay leadership, volunteers, and staff in each church to identify what aspects of worship can be safely done “live,” while also continuing to produce pre-recorded elements that will allow Open Door Churches to maintain a presence with what has developed over that past fifteen months as, essentially, an entirely new online community of faith. Questions remain about how we can safely reintroduce familiar elements of worship, such as live music & singing and participation in the Sacraments, but we remain committed stepping forward while maintaining our values of inclusivity and safety. The complexity of the conversations, all occurring simultaneously at the congregational and Open Door Churches levels, makes this an extraordinarily difficult process, but we are committed to assisting our congregations in moving to STAGE 2 as quickly as possible with a target date of early August.

STAGE 3 of the process focuses on Innovation—creatively seeking ways to expand our horizons. This stage of the process is intentionally structured to be less specific about the details, because we anticipate that each congregation will dream of new ways to share our ministries with new people. Furthermore, STAGE 3 cannot be fully envisioned at this time, because much of what we will be able to accomplish over the next several months depends at least in part on the emerging public health situation. We anticipate that some options will be open to us 2-3 months from now that are not open to us now. We also anticipate that many of our people—and many new people we have yet to meet—may never engage with us in the ways we have traditionally gathered people in-person. That fact will require us to consistently evaluate our ministries to be sure we are including people for whom in-person ministries will either not be an option or will not be their choice. This might mean creating new micro-communities in satellite locations, continuing or creating completely online opportunities for engagement, and finding ways to include persons online in ministries that have begun meeting in-person on a regular basis.

As a Pastoral Team, we are unified in our vision of helping each of our churches discern innovative pathways to open the doors for more people as we step forward in faith and love. We ask your prayers for our congregations, our staff & volunteers, and the Open Door Churches Board as we discern the path forward.
