PLEIADES
by
Artist Ray King
After 50 years, the Summit Promenade Fountain, a beloved downtown landmark, is finally getting a much-needed makeover!

To mark this special anniversary, Summit Public Art, in collaboration with Summit Downtown, Inc. and the City of Summit, is installing an original work of art designed specifically for the fountain.

PLEIADES, by world-renowned artist Ray King, is sure to become a must-see destination in downtown Summit. This exciting new work will both greatly enhance the fountain's overall appearance while maintaining the architectural integrity of the existing structure.
A Living Work of Art
Pleiades is a dynamic sculpture that reflects ever-changing colors and rays of light, adding vibrancy to the site that will keep the fountain alive and fresh for years to come.

Large slate panels will line the interior walls of the fountain and create a backdrop for the artwork. Pleiades, a 10.5-foot-wide sculpture made of shatterproof dichroic glass panels, will be suspended over the fountain basin.

The dichroic glass will reflect and project light and colors into the surrounding space during the day and at night when illuminated. Stainless steel cables will seamlessly secure, interconnect and suspend the glass panels. At the center of the piece, a composition of small stainless steel spheres references the constellation "Pleiades" named after the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione.

Over the years, King has developed expertise in the manipulation of light and color as it interacts with glass. His primary inspiration comes from geometric patterns found in nature. This has resulted in truly original light-responsive sculptures that interact with viewers and animate surroundings.
