New Mallory Street Bridge to Open to Traffic

Traffic to shift onto new half of Mallory Street Bridge to begin on Friday, July 19, 2024

HAMPTON Another milestone on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project will occur on Friday with the opening of the first half of a new Mallory Street Bridge in Hampton, marking the completion of the first phase of the bridge's reconstruction.

To accommodate the widening of Interstate 64 below, eastbound and westbound traffic on Mallory Street Bridge will be shifted to the newly constructed bridge beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024.

This shift which will allow traffic to continue while HRBT construction crews demolish and rebuild the remainder of the old bridge. Upcoming construction includes new earthen retaining walls, signals, drainage, and pavement, in addition to new pedestrian and bike lanes.

All emergency vehicles will have uninhibited access to the VA Medical Center and Hampton University during the operation. In case of inclement weather, the backup date for this work will be Saturday, July 20.

Motorists are urged to remain alert when driving in this area. All construction schedules are pending weather or unforeseen circumstances.

All construction schedules are subject to change due to impending weather or other unexpected circumstances. Construction updates and lane closure alerts can be found at HRBTexpansion.org.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones.
