Recent Placement of Public Art
by New Mexico Arts Art in Public Places Program (AIPP)
Winterowd Fine Art gallery artist Gilberto Romero recently installed his sculpture Lasting Windsong on the corner of Don Gaspar and West de Vargas which was purchased through the State’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) program. Showcasing his quintessential style—a mix of soft lines, shapes, and formal artistic elements to convey movement and the harmony of the natural world—it is made from welding long, flat sheets of bronze, a process that requires precise technique and skill in order to achieve the clean, fluid and continuous lines.

Santa Fe, the First UNESCO Creative City
designated in the United States
Throughout 2025, the City of Santa Fe is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, the first Creative City designated in the United States. UNESCO Creative Cities are chosen for innovation, investment, and community in a range of arts and creativity. As a region of many cultures and creative practices, Santa Fe and surrounding communities are home to numerous traditional artists, folk art practices, traditional art markets, and more.
The Folk Arts Program at New Mexico Arts is partnering closely with the City of Santa Fe, Museum of International Folk Art, and other partners to develop programs throughout the year to celebrate, share, and support these traditions. With the theme of “Generation/s: Tradition as Innovation”, each program spotlights intergenerational creativity, while exploring how tradition always balances continuity and creativity.
The year of celebrations began on February 28, with Celebrating Generation/s, a gathering featuring music, dance, weaving, pottery, metalwork, woodcarving, lowrider art, and more. Artists from Peñasco to Santa Fe to Cochiti came together to show their creative work, share how they are passing it on to younger generations, and explore how they each innovate within their traditions. Event attendees had the opportunity to watch break dance and mariachi, taste tamales and atole, and learn about silver jewelry, colcha embroidery, and mural art.
Look for more programs celebrating crafts and folk art throughout the year, from artist exchanges to youth workshops, art markets to cultural festivals. https://www.santafe.org/unesco-creative-cities-network/
