New Mexico Arts is saddened to hear of the passing of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. She received the Allan Houser Memorial Award in 2005. This award was presented along with the Governor’s Awards to a Native American who has demonstrated outstanding artistic success and community involvement. Smith, who was of Salish-Kootenai, Métis-Cree, and Shoshone-Bannock descent, enjoyed a fruitful career as a painter, mounting more than 80 solo exhibitions—including the 2023 retrospective “Memory Map,” held at the Whitney in New York.
New Mexico Arts AIPP Project Coordinator, Kiersten Fellrath, who worked closely with Smith has this to say: “I had the incredible opportunity to work with Jaune Quick-to-See Smith while preparing for her solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Jaune was an exceedingly kind, intelligent, hardworking, ambitious, and visionary individual, as well as an exceptional artist. Her unparalleled generosity of spirit and commitment to community was endlessly inspiring, and she always prioritized uplifting others, especially Native and Indigenous artists.”
