c̓əc̓əwitəl̕ | helping each other | ch’áwatway
On view September 16, 2020 - December 9, 2020 in the MOV Studio
This micro-exhibition in the Museum of Vancouver studio called c̓əc̓əwitəl̕ | helping each other | ch’áwatway, provides an opportunity for the 2019 YVR Art Foundation scholarship recipients to exhibit their final works. This exhibition explores themes of resilience, memory and identity, through reconnection with ancestral knowledge and lands. The title, written in both hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh snichim, shows our respect for the teachings of our host communities – the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations while acknowledging that this exhibition is taking place within their shared traditional territories.

Satellite exhibition at the Chinese Canadian Museum in Chinatown - 27 E Pender St
Friday - Sunday, 10am - 4pm
|
|
Located in the heart of Chinatown at the newly opened Chinese Canadian Museum, this first installment of A Seat at the Table offers a unique encounter with personal stories of Chinese Canadians. These snapshots from people’s lives show how Chinese migrants and their descendants have found ways to earn a living, challenge systemic racism, connect with others, survive and thrive through hope and resilience.
Visitors are invited to share their experiences as Chinese Canadians, or their interactions with Chinese Canadians in their community, or their experiences as migrants living in a new place. Visitors can choose to share their stories on camera, through in-person interviews, in writing or simply by placing a marker on a map. These narratives will contribute to the complex and continuing story of Chinese Canadians in British Columbia. As the exhibition travels throughout British Columbia, it will continue to gather and highlight stories from each location around the province. Admission is free. We recommend booking tickets online here.

Familiar Faces: Getting to know the people behind MOV!
Erika Saul, Visitor Experience Lead
Erika’s first encounter with MOV was in 2013 when she joined her family to view the exhibition Foncie’s Photos. Shortly after her grandfather passed away, her grandmother found some photos of them, taken by Foncie Pulice in the 1950s. Erika soon discovered that countless other family members and friends also had these photos tucked away, and when the MOV exhibition opened she organized for them all to attend together.
“My family’s story initially drew me to the museum, everyone else’s stories kept me here! Foncie photographed millions of people in Vancouver, not only my family but countless others. It really made me feel an even greater connection to the city and community.”
As Visitor Experience lead Erika is constantly engaging with MOV members, visitors, and partners that walk through our doors. “It’s my favourite part of the job – the fact that I am continually learning, everyday. You never know who will be walking through the front doors and what stories come with them. The work that MOV does through the consultation process on exhibitions, especially with indigenous communities is another reason I am so proud of working here.”

Garibaldi Park is a nature park located about 70 kilometres north of Vancouver. This Booklet, published in the early 1920s, provided general information on various significant landmarks, descriptions of park trails and photographs of surrounding mountains and landscapes. It also contained guidelines for hikers, required supplies, adequate clothing and a map of the park's hiking trails.
Museum of Vancouver has partnered with Point Two Designs to create an online shop stocked with a collection of art prints that represent Vancouver's history! Each print has been digitally restored and beautifully re-colorized to bring these historical artefacts back to their original glory.
