Beginning today, Monday June 8th, CACFP childcare facilities now have the option to serve whole milk and 2% low-fat milk to participants two years old and older! The USDA recognizes that fluid milk is one of the most wasted food items on the food program. The intent of this new rule is to reduce the amount of waste and to relieve you of the burden of having to purchase and serve several types of milk that vary by age group.
Please see the table below for a side-by-side comparison of the old requirements for fluid milk and the new requirements that go into effect today. Note there is no change in the requirements for 1 year olds - they are still limited to unflavored whole milk only. The milk served to 2 -5 year olds is still required to be unflavored, regardless of the type of milk you choose to serve.
Over the next few weeks, Karamu will be updating our cycle menus and the milk selections in Kidkare to reflect the new requirements. Have a great week!
