Black History Month Proclamation

Black History Month is more than a commemoration of historic events. It is a

reminder that Black history is American history. It invites us to take an unvarnished

look at where we have been so we can build a better future, recognizing that all of us

have benefitted from the labors of those who came before. Town life is a collaborative

work in progress, and the Town of Herndon encourages all residents to honor the

stories, achievements, and sacrifices that continue to shape our community.

Therefore, at its meeting on Tuesday, February 3 the Mayor, together with the Herndon Town Council, proclaimed the month of February 2026 as Black History Month in the

Town of Herndon; encouraging all citizens to celebrate Black history and culture –

emphasizing the importance of educating others about the contributions and

accomplishments of Black Americans; and highlighting the resolve of Black Americans,

who helped build our nation and furthered the cause of social justice.

Bring in Your Bins

Winter winds have a habit of sending trash cans on unexpected adventures. Help keep yours where they belong by bringing them in from the curb as soon as you can. Adding a sticker or other identifying mark is also a great way to ensure you can easily spot and retrieve your can if it does take a trip down the street.

50 Mile Challenge

In honor of the Parks & Recreation Department’s 50th Anniversary, we’re inviting the community to participate in our 50 Miles for 50 Years Challenge—a fun and motivating way to stay active while celebrating five decades of recreation in Herndon. The challenge is open to all ages and fitness levels. Choose the activity that motivates you and track your progress throughout the year.

Choose Your Activity:

  • Swim 50 miles
  • Complete 50 miles of water aerobics*

(Or mix and match—every bit of movement counts!)

*1 aerobic class / 1 hour water exercise on your own = 1 mile

Everyone who completes the challenge before the end of 2026 will receive special 50th anniversary prizes. Participants can pick up their tracking sheet at the Herndon Community Center or visit www.herndon-va.gov/recreation to print and track at home.

Whether you prefer swimming laps or enjoying water aerobics, the goal is simple - Complete 50 miles before December 31, 2026.
