New Music Venue on Edge of Downtown

A new 6,600-seat music venue on the former Civic Arena site will be built by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The $120 million mixed-use development in the Lower Hill will also include retail space and a parking garage.

The Penguins are partnering with music promotion giant Live Nation Entertainment.

The venue will be a 90,000-square-foot design and will accommodate shows of various sizes. It will include an enclosed area for club and theater performances. The new venue will also feature an outdoor lawn and will be built atop an 850-space garage at Wylie Avenue and Logan Street.

"There will not be another venue like this in the region, and we expect it will become the entertainment anchor for the Lower Hill, drive significant business to nearby restaurants and contribute to the rich fabric of live music in Pittsburgh," said David Morehouse, CEO and president of the Penguins .

This mid-sized venue is expected to complement PPG Paints Arena, which seats 18,000 people. It would be used 200 nights a year for ticketed shows and corporate events.

"Ever since we established our full-time office in Pittsburgh, we've been focused on adding a music venue within the urban core of the city," says Tom Loudermilk, president of Live Nation Pittsburgh.

The development will include up to 17,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space along Wylie Avenue, and up to 34,000 square feet of second- and third-floor retail space.

"Live Nation's 20-year commitment to this project will serve as the second entertainment anchor, along with PPG Paints Arena, and bring this transformational project one step closer to fulfilling its vision," said Chris Buccini, co-president of The Buccini/Pollin Group.

Groundbreaking is expected this summer, with Live Nation occupying the site in 2022.

Tony and Grammy Award Winning The Band's Visit

The critically acclaimed smash-hit Broadway musical The Band's Visit is the winner of 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, making it one of the most Tony-winning musicals in history. It is also a Grammy Award® winner for Best Musical Theater Album.

In this joyously offbeat story, set in a town that's way off the beaten path, a band of musicians arrive lost, out of the blue. Under the spell of the desert sky, and with beautiful music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected and tantalizing ways. Even the briefest visit can stay with you forever.

The cast of world-class performers is led by award-winning Israeli actor Sasson Gabay, star of the original film and the Broadway production, and Chilina Kennedy, known best for her historic run as Carole King in Broadway's Beautiful - The Carole King Musical.

With a Tony- and Grammy-winning score that seduces your soul and sweeps you off your feet, and featuring thrillingly talented onstage musicians, The Band's Visit rejoices in the way music makes us laugh, makes us cry, and ultimately, brings us together.

Tony Award Winning Pippin

With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner and musical theater giant, Stephen Schwartz, Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this updated circus-inspired version of Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.

Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day.

Presented in the grand PNC Theatre, Pippin's message is universal and will connect with audiences across the age spectrum.

Broadway Hit Debuts in Cultural District
By: Asher Winnie

The O'Reilly Theater will be home to the regional premier of American Son, a Broadway and Netflix hit presented by the Pittsburgh Public Theater. The contemporary drama is the creation of Christopher Demos-Brown, directed by Justin Emeka (the talent behind Sweat last season), at home in the heart of Downtown's cultural district. American Son's regional premier will last from March 5th to April 5th. Tickets are available now by visiting The O'Reilly Box Office, visiting ppt.org or calling (412)-316-1600.

American Son is a contemporary drama wherein the characters challenge each other's assumptions about the others. Demos-Brown's writing also tackles the anxieties of parenting in the 21st century, taking an introspective look at race, gender and power. The regional debut stars the talent of Bianca LeVerne Jones as Kendra, mother to the 18-year old Jamal. Pittsburgh favorite David Whalen plays Scott Connor, FBI Agent.

According to director Justin Emeka: "American Son invites the audience into an intimate examination of what it means to be an American, what brings us together and what pulls us apart. At the heart of the play is a conversation between two people struggling to build a vocabulary to address the challenges facing their family and community," he says.

Christopher Demos-Brown's American Son premiered at the Booth Theater on Broadway in 2018, being made into a Netflix special a year later in 2019. Both were directed by Kenny Leon. Demos-Brown has written over a dozen plays and screenplays, having worked as a prosecutor and a trial lawyer. He and his wife Stephanie co-own a theater company called Zoetic Stage. American Son will run at the Pittsburgh Public Theater March 5th until April 5th. Opening Night / Press Night is Friday, March 13th. Tickets are available now at The O'Reilly Box Office, by visiting ppt.org or contacting 412-316-1600.
