New Orleans Startup Fund Announces New Class of PowerMoves.NOLA Fellows
Program provides access, resources to entrepreneurs of color
New Orleans Startup Fund
NEW ORLEANS -  The New Orleans Startup Fund announced a new class of PowerMoves.NOLA fellows today. The fellowship program was created to increase the number of venture-backed, high-growth, high-tech startups led by entrepreneurs of color in New Orleans.

New Orleans has earned a reputation as one of the nation's leading startup hubs, and in 2014, the New Orleans Startup Fund created PowerMoves.NOLA to be intentional about growing an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem in the city.

"We are pleased to announce this amazing group of innovators as our next class of PowerMoves.NOLA fellows," said Jimmy Roussel, CEO of the New Orleans Startup Fund. "We want to attract and retain this caliber of talent in New Orleans. By sourcing and shining a spotlight on this select group entrepreneurs, we're not only helping them grow their startups, we're expecting an exponential impact on New Orleans and the surrounding region."

Entrepreneurs of color face systemic and generational barriers to success, including lack of access to venture capital and advisory networks. According to CB Insights, only 1% of venture-backed companies have an African American founder. PowerMoves.NOLA seeks to level the playing field for entrepreneurs of color as a strategy for strengthening the community, closing the opportunity gap, and growing the economy.

"We're looking to give the entrepreneurs a running start to help them launch and scale their businesses by providing comprehensive supports and plugging them into an enthusiastic community of inventors and advisors who share a commitment to inclusion and economic growth in New Orleans," said Roussel. "This is also about creating deal flow for investors. We've selected companies that we think have the potential to provide a compelling return on investment."

Each PowerMoves.NOLA fellow will receive access to resources they need to succeed, including capital, mentoring, and office space.

Past PowerMoves.NOLA fellows include Crystal McDonald of Acrew, Glenda McKinley English of MySelfie Live, and KG Charles-Harris of Quarrio.

PowerMoves.NOLA is made possible through the support of Chevron, as Founding Sponsor, and Entergy.

About the New Orleans Startup Fund

The New Orleans Startup Fund ("The Startup Fund" or "NOSF") is a non-profit 501(c)(3) evergreen seed fund established by business and financial leaders in the Greater New Orleans area, and originally incubated by Greater New Orleans, Inc., to accelerate the growth of early-stage, innovative businesses into venture-ready companies. The Startup Fund's mission is to create jobs and economic prosperity for the 10-parish Greater New Orleans region by providing seed capital and business assistance to early-stage firms that demonstrate significant growth potential.

Since its inception in 2010, the fund has invested $1.75 million in 25 local companies that in turn have raised over $24 million - for a multiple of over 13 times the original NOSF investment.

PowerMoves.NOLA is an initiative of NOSF to support high-growth, high-tech startups led by entrepreneurs of color and position New Orleans as a hub for minority entrepreneurship. Since its inception in 2014, it has help more than 100 companies, providing direct support for entrepreneurs of color and building a national ecosystem to connect them with investors, advisors, and peers.

The Main Street Program was designed to provide technical assistance to minority-owned small businesses in New Orleans. The program is being funded by a $100,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The NOSF's success is made possible with the generous support of Chevron, Entergy, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

New Orleans Based Tech Startup, FollowMyCal Launched on Yesterday
PowerMoves.NOLA Entrepreneur Creates Easy
Online Scheduling Solution
PowerMoves.NOLA - skyline
NEW ORLEANS (4/18/17)  - FollowMyCal, a new tech startup company based in New Orleans, launched today. Anyone needing a quick and easy way to manage the events in their life can start now for free at and by downloading the free app on Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS). FollowMyCal makes it easy for people to organize their personal, professional, and social events all on one centralized platform and to share those events with others. It is a user-friendly platform that encourages event planning and organization in a way that is fun and social.

"If you are part of a business, club, organization, church group, non-profit, family, or any other group of people that needs an easy and seamless way to create a calendar and share it with others, FollowMyCal is the best free solution you can find on the market," said Richard Carthon, FollowMyCal's founder and CEO.

Carthon came up with the idea for FollowMyCal while at Tulane University. He was a full time student with a heavy course load, a dual-sport D-1 athlete in football and baseball, and active in five organizations on campus.

"Like most people, my schedule was full, to say the least. I would miss events all the time either because I did not know about them, the events got lost in email chains, or the events did not update on my calendar. I missed out on a lot or wasted my time because creating calendar events and sharing them across platforms wasn't seamless. I knew that if someone could create a quick and easy way to get this done, then it would solve a challenge that most people face every day."

Carthon is an entrepreneur in the PowerMoves.NOLA program, which is an initiative of the New Orleans Startup Fund to support high-growth, high-tech startups led by entrepreneurs of color in New Orleans. The program is made possible through the generous support of Chevron and Entergy.

"PoweMoves.NOLA has helped me move my business forward by providing me with access to resources and an extensive network of advisors and businesses," said Carthon. "In addition to office space, PowerMoves.NOLA has invested in FollowMyCal with funding that has allowed me to launch and grow."

FollowMyCal is free for users. The company plans to generate revenue by allowing users to pay to promote their calendars and events on the FollowMyCal website and by offering custom calendar solutions for businesses.

"The best part of FollowMyCal is that it allows you to manage multiple calendars in one platform," said Carthon. "You can share your next work meeting with just your colleagues, your kid's dentist appointment with just your spouse, and the game schedule with just your teammates- all separately, but all in the same place."

FollowMyCal works in three ways:

Users can create a personal calendar, called My Cal, that no one else on the platform can see. They can seamlessly integrate Google and Outlook Exchange calendars with their My Cal.

Users can also create public calendars and make that information available and accessible to anyone in the world. They can also follow calendars that interest them. On the FollowMyCal website discover page, users can find calendars and add events to their personal calendars and share events with other calendars, on and off the platform, in one click.

Users can create a calendar and grant permissions for individuals to view and add events. This is a way for users to keep all of their calendars in one place, while keeping them distinct from one another.
