LOS ANGELES (MAY 20, 2020) - Larry Aubry, an icon of black activist Los Angeles who witnessed white resistance to school integration and the Watts and 1992 riots without losing faith that hard work and outrage would manifest racial justice, has died.

|
Aubry, 86, died May 16 after a short illness, writer Erin Aubry Kaplan, one of his five children, said. A writer as well as an activist, he composed more than 1,700 hard-hitting columns over 33 years for the Los Angeles Sentinel and served two terms on the Inglewood School Board.
But it was his decades of social, political and community activism on issues including black education, job training, police accountability, fair housing and reparations that shaped his life. The groups he helped found or lead spanned the early civil rights era of the 1960s to Black Lives Matter, and included Advocates for Black Strategic Alternatives, which most recently fought to expand rent control, and the Black Community Clergy and Labor Alliance, which has worked on housing and charter school issues.
“When I was young and asked my mom what he did, she said he went to meetings,” said Aubry Kaplan, who is a contributing writer to the L.A. Times’ Opinion section. “It took a while to understand what he did and why it was bigger than us as a family.”
Aubry mentored generations of African American activists, some of whom went on to win elected office. But he also helped guide and support younger activists who believed that the black leadership had grown complacent and too accommodating to the status quo.
“Larry was very much the godfather of South-Central Los Angeles,” said Damien Goodmon, founder and executive director of the Crenshaw Subway Coalition, “not in the sense of a kingmaker, but as the conscience of black L.A.” ...

GNO, Inc. Launches GNOpivot Marketplace to Help Companies Source Local PPE Products
|
|
NEW ORLEANS (May 18, 2020) - Today, Greater New Orleans, Inc. (GNO, Inc.) launched the
GNOpivot Marketplace
, a free online platform for regional businesses that provide high-demand products and services for the coronavirus outbreak and post-pandemic recovery.
GNOpivot Marketplace is the region’s destination to explore and buy products for the “New Normal” economy. The site celebrates and supports the ingenuity and resilience of the region’s business community during the recovery of the local economy. More importantly, it will ensure that companies can provide their workers and customers with the right level of protection during Phase 1 of reopening and beyond.
“We’ve seen many companies rise to the occasion and quickly pivot their businesses to ensure that our frontline has the products they need to protect employees and customers,” said
Michael Hecht, President & CEO of GNO, Inc.
“The GNOpivot Marketplace is the regional “eBay” for recovery, connecting supply to demand, and helping companies generate new revenue streams.”
Guy Williams, GNO, Inc.’s Board Chair and President/CEO of Gulf Coast Bank
, said “At Gulf Coast Bank, we were proud to reopen using local suppliers for face masks, shields, hand sanitizer, and catering. We encourage everyone to shop local first using GNOpivot Marketplace”
The products found on the GNOpivot Marketplace include Health Care Products, Face Shields, Masks, Professional Services, Telework Software, Catering Services, and more. The marketplace also supports a variety of transactions: Professional Services, Products for Sale, Free Products or Trials, Donations, and Volunteer Services.
“We’re thrilled to join the GNOpivot Marketplace and help our community stay safe during the “back-to-work” phase”, said
Peter Seltzer, founder of Pete’s Papercrafts and NOLA Sneeze Guards
. “Joining the marketplace is a great way for us to feature our COVID-related products to a greater local audience. Before the pandemic, we used to provide intricate three-dimensional dioramas and laser cutting services. We quickly pivoted our services to produce needed protective goods such as sneeze guards and with the GNOpivot Marketplace, we can focus on building our products while remaining in business.”
Greater New Orleans, Inc. has created this platform, at no cost for participants, in response to an expressed need for new items in the community upon reopening. Each seller maintains their own listings and transactions with customers. The GNOpivot Marketplace is inviting any company that has adjusted its products or services to this “new normal” economy to join and list their offering on the GNOpivot Marketplace by going to
gnopivot.org
.
GNOpivot originally began as an initiative to help regional companies move to “war footing,” wherein they pivot their standard operations in order to make products or provide services in demand for the fight against the coronavirus. At its core, GNOpivot has helped Louisiana “flatten the curve” of viral infections, and has also helped sustain the Greater New Orleans economy.

History of St. John the Baptist Parish
St. John the Baptist Parish was the second permanent settlement in Louisiana and established in the early 1720's by a group of Germans, hence becoming known as "La Cote des Allemands" or "The German Coast". Led by Karl Frederic D'Arensbourg, a settlement was created on the west bank of the Mississippi River in the area now known as Lucy which was originally named Karistein. Some families also began farming land on the east bank, in what is now Garyville and Reserve.
D'Arensbourg's grandson, Jacques Villere , was born at Lucy and became the second governor of the state of Louisiana. He was the first Creole (Louisiana born) person of pure European descent to hold that office.
The area remained under the French regime until 1768, when France delivered Louisiana to the Spanish. At this time the Acadians or "Cajuns" began arriving in South Louisiana after being exiled from Nova Scotia. The first Acadian settlement was established at what is now called Wallace. The French and German cultures mixed, with French becoming the dominant language. German names were given French translations. Heidel became Haydel, Ruber became Oubre, Treagor - Tregre and so on...

BUSINESS WIRE - 5/13/2020
) - SaaS platform
Resilia
announces an $8M series A funding round, led by
Mucker Capital
and
Callais Capital Management
with participation by
Cultivation Capital
, to support the company’s growth and increased demand. In addition to being one of the largest series A rounds of an enterprise software company headed by an African American female founder, it also marks the highest venture capital raise by a female-founded tech company in the state of Louisiana. Resilia serves a two-sided market enabling grantors like cities, private foundations, and corporations to deploy capital quickly and efficiently, while giving nonprofits expanded tools for compliance, management, training, and funding.
|

Founded by serial entrepreneur
Sevetri Wilson
(above left)
in 2016, Resilia’s mission is to harness the power of technology and human connection to bridge gaps between those deploying capital and those on the receiving end, and to democratize innovation for the entire nonprofit industry. The platform’s Nonprofit Formation product (available in all 50 U.S. states) offers a “turbo tax” approach, expediting the process of incorporating and applying for tax exemption. For existing nonprofits, Nonprofit Pro and Plus help organizations stay compliant while increasing capacity through online training, webinars, and other resources geared to productize consultancy services drastically reducing costs to nonprofits. Lastly, Resilia’s Enterprise solution enables grantors to streamline data collection; track budgets; manage grantees, reporting, and evaluation; and provide much-needed capacity support to the projects and organizations that they fund.
“We spotted Resilia early-on, and have been impressed with Sevetri’s leadership and her team’s ability to identify market needs, move quickly, and expand their products to serve the complex needs of grantors and grantees,” said William Hsu, co-founder and partner at Mucker Capital who also joined Resilia’s board.
Added Hal Callais, managing partner and CIO at Callais Capital Management: “Resilia has made a tremendous impact by building an innovative platform for both early-stage non-profits and some of the world’s largest foundations, and we look forward to helping them continue to scale. Their platform is particularly necessary during times of crises to ensure oversight, management, and transparency. We’ve already seen tremendous opportunity in the last several weeks with the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent deployment of funding specifically earmarked for such relief.”
To date, Resilia’s 2,800+ customers have ranged from small to mid-sized nonprofits, government offices, private foundations, and corporations. Notable customers include Oxfam America, Kellogg, The United Way, and Stem Library Lab. Prior to its Series A round, the company raised $400K pre-seed and $2M seed capital which included investors like Kevin Lin (formerly of Twitch) and Tim Millikin (partner at TPG Capital), Newark Venture Partners, New Orleans StartupFund and others. Follow on investors include Next Wave Ventures, Engage, and The JumpFund.

Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority Honors Its Namesake with New Campaign Targeting Small and Emerging Businesses During COVID-19 Pandemic
|
|
NEW ORLEANS (4/30/2020) – The Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority (“Authority”), the governing board of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, launched a television campaign this week honoring the legacy of its namesake, Former Mayor Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial, and his commitment to economic inclusion for all New Orleans citizens.
The campaign, which features archival footage of the former Mayor was created to encourage Small and Emerging Businesses to stay connected to current and future opportunities available at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The former Mayor was known for his many “firsts,” including creating New Orleans’ first Office of Economic Development.
“The Convention Center has made it our commitment to support Small and Emerging Businesses,” said Walt Leger III, Authority Chairman. “Our goal is to inspire businesses, big and small, to promote the economic growth of our small business community,” Leger added.
The campaign will run during local television news programs for two weeks.
Last year, the Authority launched the SEBConnect App, a first-of-its-kind business tool specifically designed to put contracting opportunities at the Convention Center in the hands of small businesses via their smart phones. Businesses are encouraged to download the SEBConnect app, available for free on iOS and Android platforms.
In addition to SEBConnect, the Authority’s Small and Emerging Business program has a dedicated webpage devoted to assisting business owners with State and Local program certification as well as an integrated outreach campaign to educate business owners on the opportunities at the Convention Center. Information on the program, along with campaign videos, can be accessed at
