New Outdoor Fitness Space Coming to Vallejo Waterfront

Vallejo, CA - The City of Vallejo Public Works Department is moving forward with an exciting new project that will bring a waterfront workout space to Independence Park along Mare Island Way. The project includes the purchase and installation of permanent outdoor fitness equipment along the waterfront. Because the site is in a census tract where more than 51 percent of residents have low or moderate income, the project will directly benefit community members who often face limited access to recreational resources.

This new outdoor fitness zone will expand equitable access to health-promoting infrastructure and support residents who were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The project budget of $114,000 is funded through the Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus Program, which focuses on improving public health outcomes and supporting safe outdoor activity. The design encourages social distancing and reduces reliance on indoor facilities, helping the community stay active while lowering the risk of COVID-19 transmission. All project costs meet federal requirements for prevention, preparation, and response related to coronavirus.

The equipment will be similar to the popular outdoor gym at Wetlands Edge Park in American Canyon.

Public Works is preparing the area this week and plans to pour the concrete pad the week of October 12. Next, the team will install wood bollards, cabling around the perimeter, and additional support materials. The fitness equipment is expected to arrive and be installed in early December. Just in time to help everyone kick off those New Year fitness goals.

More updates will be shared as the project progresses.
