October 2016 Edition

Light, corrosion-resistant, economical, easy-to-use, and "in stock" are some accurate terms to describe two new styles of UPVC (un-plasticized polyvinyl chloride) housings from Delta Pure Filtration. The PCV-5 filter housing holds five thirty-inch tall DOE filters.  The PHF style housing holds a 6 inch diameter pleated filter (inside to outside flow).

A good question for us to ask our customers is "what materials are your pipes, tanks and other components."  When the customer says "PVC" that could signal an opportunity to recommend PCV-5 and PHF style filter vessels from Delta Pure Filtration. In some cases where the customer can use stainless steel, a plastic housing can help reduce concerns about potential long term corrosion.

Potential applications can be found in plating, electronics (e.g., circuit board fab), waste water, water utilities, OEM skid systems, salt water, chemical filtration, and wherever PVC materials are acceptable.

Note: Size 1 and size 2 bag housings in UPVC are not kept in stock, but we can supply these housings on request with a longer lead time.

Computer modeling assists with development of string wound filters:

The pattern that emerges on a string wound filter is based on the interaction between the rate at which the filter is rotating as it is being wound, and the rate at which the string-guide moves back and forth. Small variations in machine set up can result in vastly different patterns - for example, the winding pattern in a string-wound filter can have the appearance of a series of triangles in a tight pattern, or the filter can appear to have actual holes in it for a much coarser removal rating.

When Todd Furbee purchased Delta Pure Filtration in 2007, he acquired the instructions on machine set- ups for the micron rating patterns for various string wound filters that were "the standard filters" at the time.  Since then we have added many new and customized string wound filters -custom lengths, special diameters, and customized patterns to meet new and demanding applications, not to mention numerous new materials - and establishing machine settings for the right pattern has involved experience and a lot of trial and error during product development.

We were recently challenged with manufacturing a 2" long string wound filter for an OEM who uses a compact filter system.  Developing the filters consumed five hours of machine time and too many pounds of yarn for a trial and error approach to ultimately obtain the correct pattern - this took the winding machine out of service for making production orders - a very expensive process.

In response we developed a computer model for better understanding string wound filter patterns. The remarkable thing about the model is that it uses Microsoft Excel which is not a typical tool for such  mathematical modeling!  This tool should streamline our filter development process going forward.  The image above shows a two inch long filter and an image based on a mathematical model of the filter.
Filter Companies Presented New Technologies at AFS Dixie Chapter

On September 15th professionals from the filter, water treatment, and related disciplines met in Glen Allen, Virginia to network and educate each other.   Attendees who have decades of filtration experience and newcomers alike found the meeting very informative.  It was a wonderful social and learning experience.  This is a great organization and we encourage other companies and individuals to join and get involved in AFS (American Filtration Society).
The table below shows the topics presented.  If you wish that you could have attended, it is ok - just come to the next AFS event!  You can also reach out to the presenting companies for additional information.

FF Series Success Story:

One of our newest product lines is the FF Series filters and housings - comprised of 4.5" diameter  x 30" tall filters, and top-loaded no-spill stainless steel housings.  We have had successes right out of the starting gate.  One example is Jeff Snyder of Sanjay Marketing in Pennsylvania who recently sold two systems for cooling water. Jeff explained that the customer's water was previously unfiltered and the customer recently had to pay $6,000-7,000 to replace fouled, damaged heat exchangers. Heat exchangers can narrow from deposits and experience corrosion if cooling water is left untreated - this can result in poor heat exchange (loss of efficiency) and expensive repairs. Often a combination of chemical additives and filtration is used to treat cooling water.  Before selecting the Delta Pure Filtration FF Series filter system, the customer considered a bag filter housing assembly, but found the FF Series to be more attractively priced.  The system has been delivered and is in the process of being installed. We expect great things from this new product line.  Great job, Jeff!
