Pickleball courts are opening on campus this spring

A new pickleball venue at Cal State LA is being set up at the existing futsal courts in front of the Student Services Building for dual usage. Designed to promote recreation and wellness, it will feature four state-of-the-art courts accessible to students, staff, and faculty. A valid Cal State LA ID and appropriate footwear are required in order to enter the facility. A soft opening for staff and faculty is being planned for Friday, April 4. There will be more information to come soon about access, opening hours, and rental guidelines for the local community.

Staff Working Group hosts Black History Month celebration

The Staff Working Group for Belonging, Community, and Diversity will host a reflection walk in celebration of Black History Month celebration on Friday, Feb. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will feature welcome remarks from Marjani Chidinma, associate director of recruitment. The walk will begin at Rosser Hall (ACSB 132) and end at King Hall. The walk will feature quotes along with reflection prompts from notable Black figures. Participants will have an opportunity to share their reflections at the conclusion of the event. Advanced registration is recommended, but not required.

Super Sunday service scheduled for Feb. 23

Cal State LA President Berenecea Johnson Eanes will speak at West Angeles Church on Feb. 23 during the 10 a.m. service. President Eanes' message is part of Super Sunday, a CSU statewide initiative to encourage African American youth to pursue higher education and to apply to the CSU. The Admissions and Recruitment team will also be attending the service to offer information about applying to Cal State LA.  

Women’s History Month celebration in March

Join us next month as Cal State LA celebrates Women's History Month. We invite our Golden Eagle community to participate in opportunities for critical discussions and reflection, with the intention of making Cal State LA a place where our women-identifying Golden Eagles can be their full selves. Town hall sessions focusing on the CSU strategic plan

The CSU is entering the second phase of its strategic planning process and will hold several virtual town hall sessions on the future direction of the CSU. These interactive sessions will provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and community members to contribute ideas, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue about our systemwide priorities. Please be sure to register online to secure your spot in an upcoming session. In addition to the town halls, the CSU also encourages feedback through its CSU Strategic Planning engagement platform.

Commuter Meal Plans for students, faculty, and staff

Enjoy stress-free dining with our faculty and staff meal plans at the Village Commons. Our all-you-care-to-eat buffet offers a range of options, from vegetarian and vegan dishes to a made-to-order grill and desserts. Choose the plan that fits your schedule and enjoy freshly made meals in a relaxed setting. In addition, staff can purchase a meal plan and treat their teams. Learn more about the meal plan options.

Dreamers Resource Center offers UndocuAlly training

The Erika J. Glazer Family Dreamers Resource Center is offering virtual training workshops that will prepare faculty and staff to be allies for undocumented students. Register online for the trainings on Friday, Feb. 21, from 10 to 11 a.m., and Wednesday, April 16, from 3 to 4 p.m. To sign up, complete the UndocuAlly training registration form.

Students showcase research, scholarship, creativity

The Annual Cal State LA Student Symposium on Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity will take place on Friday, Feb. 28 in the University-Student Union. The symposium offers students an opportunity to gain experience in delivering professional presentations on their research, scholarly, or creative activities. The oral presentations will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the poster presentations will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Luckman features Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández

Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández returns to the Luckman Fine Arts Complex on Sunday, March 16, bringing together the music, dance, and costume of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations to the modern era. Cal State LA faculty and staff can purchase discounted tickets at the Luckman Box Office upon presentation of a valid Cal State LA One Card. For ticket information, call 323-343-6600. 

Grad Fair 2025 is a one-stop shop for graduating students

The Alumni Association will hold Grad Fair 2025 on Thursday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on the University-Student Union Plaza. Grad Fair provides graduating students with a one-stop shopping venue to fulfill all of their graduation needs. For more information, call 323-343-2586.

Income tax filing services offered by Cal State LA VITA

The College of Business and Economics' Department of Accounting, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, is offering Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) to low- and moderate-income individuals. Free tax preparation services will be offered at Cal State LA and other community sites. For more information, visit the Cal State LA VITA website. The free VITA program will run each Saturday through April 12.

The Office of Strategic Communications is accepting submissions for the next edition of University Reports. The web publication showcases professional activities and publications, as well as the awards received by our faculty and staff. Submit your information to the Office of Strategic Communications at paffairs@calstatela.edu for inclusion in the next issue.

Sign up for Mental Health First Aid Training

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training. This program teaches participants how to assist someone experiencing a crisis. Participants learn risk factors and warning signs of serious and developing mental health problems, how to talk with a person who might be experiencing a mental health problem, and strategies to help identify the next best steps. Please check the training website for dates and registration info.
