NASA Harvest and ESA WorldCereal Collaborate on Custom Crop Mapping System

NASA Harvest is partnering with the European Space Agency to refine and test its WorldCereal crop mapping system for use in more complex agricultural settings. At a recent workshop, we joined our partners and a national government agency in Zambia to test the system using localized data, focusing on how it performs in real-world conditions.

Reviewing a Decade of Research on Satellite-Based Yield Modeling in Smallholder Agriculture

NASA Harvest scientists reviewed a decade of satellite-based yield modeling in smallholder systems, where limited ground data and complex field conditions continue to constrain performance. Their findings explain why models often struggle to transfer across regions and point to improved field data and sampling as the main path to more reliable estimates.

Planet Launches New Initiative on Planetary Security

Planet has launched a planetary security initiative that explicitly connects Earth observation to food and water risk. A central component is its collaboration with NASA Harvest through the RAAPID initiative, which focuses on rapid, data-driven responses to emerging agricultural shocks. By combining Planet’s high-frequency satellite imagery with Harvest’s analytical frameworks, the effort aims to detect disruptions earlier and translate them into actionable signals for food security planning.

U.S. Farmers Visit NASA Headquarters to Advance Earth Observation Collaboration in Agriculture

Members of the Illinois Corn Growers Association and Kentucky Corn Growers Association traveled to NASA Headquarters to engage directly with the agency’s Earth science leadership and research teams.

The visit included discussions with Karen St. Germain, Director of NASA’s Earth Science Division, our sister consortium NASA Acres and the broader NASA agriculture team.

NASA is continuing to further develop our relationship with America's farming community and develop satellite-based tools to support farm-level decision making.

Upcoming Events

2026 National 4-H Conference Youth Expo

Monday, April 13, 2026

NASA Harvest and our sister consortium NASA Acres are joining the broader NASA agriculture team at the Youth Expo during the 2026 National 4H Conference.

The expo is one component of a broader national program organized by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture that brings youth to Washington, D.C. to engage with science, policy, and leadership in agriculture.

NASA experts will showcase how Earth observations are being used in real agricultural contexts, connecting satellite data to farm management, resource use, and food system challenges.

NASA Space to Soil Challenge:

Small Satellite Technologies for Agriculture and Forestry Innovation

Challenge Launch: Jan 30th, 2026

Submissions Due: May 4th, 2026

NASA is inviting students, researchers, and entrepreneurs to compete in the Space to Soil Challenge, a new competition focused on small satellite technologies for agriculture and forestry.

Teams will design mission concepts that use AI, edge computing, or adaptive sensing to improve Earth observation and support more resilient land management. Up to $400,000 in prizes are available.

Submissions are due May 4, 2026, and must include a five-page paper, a three-minute video, and technical materials such as code or schematics.

Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 Workshop

Virtually May 12-13, 2026

NASA is hosting a two-day virtual workshop on the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) dataset, led by its Satellite Needs Working Group Implementation Team. The sessions will walk through how HLS is structured, where it performs well in practice, and how users can access and apply it across platforms. The format leans practical, with time set aside to surface user challenges and gaps.

Register for the workshop here.
