Issue Date: January 6, 2022
ANNOUNCEMENTS

This issue we will focus on some new products that were announced in December that did not get coverage due to the Golden Saw Bone Awards.

We are trying some new things as we go over here at FAN, and one thing we would like to test in an option to receive additional info on NEW products (i.e. videos, technique guides, etc). It is an opt-in way for physicians to get additional information on products that would be sent in a subsequent email.

If you are interested, click the SEND ME MORE INFO button under the product review. We will see how it goes and if it is a feature you want, we will continue doing it.

Thanks for reading, extremely grateful for our FANs!

DEVICE NEWS
New Product Releases
2022 should be a big year for product launches and hopefully some new technology in the foot and ankle space. In addition to a few gamechangers, we will most certainly see companies to continue to fill out their bags with “me too” products to be able to compete on the streets and to avoid be boxed out on the contracting side.

FAN will grade new product releases based on Technology, Company Impact, and Product/Market fit. These grades are subjective and only the opinion of the keyboard warriors at FAN, so please feel free to request more product info and judge for yourself.

Device companies or surgeon consultants:
Please send any new product releases that you would like potentially featured in the weekly FAN to footandanklenews@gmail.com.
  • Low-profile, knotless suture fixation with patented tensionable technology and the ability to interconnect with similar anchors.
  • No knot impingement or knot loosening.
  • Minimal Bone Removal—less morbidity and more room for other anchors, including InternalBrace™ ligament augmentation repair for lateral ankle ligament instability.
  • Tremendous Pull-Out Strength—equivalent to 3.0 mm BioComposite SutureTak® anchor. Surgeons can be confident in the ability of this anchor even with a small diameter footprint
FAN GRADE = 8.33
  • Technology - 9
  • Company Impact - 8
  • Product/Market Fit - 8

You had me at knotless, tensionable, all suture anchors. Arthrex soft tissue products best defense has and will continue to be a great offense. They continue to create and upgrade their existing technology, making it tough for any of their major competitors to gain much ground in this space.

  • 4 plates in Anterior, Left/Right Specific and Flat/Contoured Offerings
  • Designed to Offer Surgeons a Minimally Invasive Approach for Anterior Ankle Fusions
  • Transitional Plate Thickness Providing Increased Material Where Plates are Subject to Most Stress
  • Five Plate Screw Diameters Offered in Locking and Nonlocking Options
  • Robust Offering of Joint Preparation Instrumentation
FAN GRADE = 6.67
  • Technology - 7
  • Company Impact - 5
  • Product/Market Fit - 8

This plate extension is very similar in nature to the Arthrex plate, but as Paragon tends to do, they have added more flexibility with size options and tied in a very slick targeting guide for ease of compression screw placement. Paragon has the most robust of all ankle fusion systems and this was the piece that was missing and capitalizes on the hot market trend of MIS.

  • Patent-Pending Single Clamp Allows for Bar-to-Bar or Bar-to-Pin Construction
  • Multi-hole Clamp Option with Straight and Bent Posts
  • 5mm Self-Tapping and Blunt Half-Pins
  • Carbon Fiber Bars
  • MRI Compatible
FAN GRADE = 6.67
  • Technology - 6
  • Company Impact - 8
  • Product/Market Fit - 6

This is not a revolutionary product by any means; however, distributors and reps like to carry products with high ASP’s which lead to larger pay checks. A pin to bar ex-fix is typically a 30 min case that can bill in the 4k to 12k range. We must assume that if a surgeon is using the Paragon 28 Monkey Bars, they will use the ankle fracture/pilon systems for definitive fixation. Not going to change the orthopedic world but will make a big difference in some areas for reps with the right relationships.

In2BonesColink Vallux
  • Joint-Sparing MIS Solution for Triplanar Hallux Valgus Correction
  • Implant Guided Translational Osteotomy
  • Zero Prominence Plating System
FAN GRADE = 4.33
  • Technology - 3
  • Company Impact - 5
  • Product/Market Fit - 5

I will give In2Bones credit, they are trying to capitalize on the MIS trend in the bunion world. The plate is offered in one size and is reminiscent in design of calc slide plates from days past. It offers poly-axial locking and non-locking screw options, but not much more aside from that. A meat and potatoes MIS plate option that is simple…yes, game changing…not really. Maybe it will take off, who knows?
