When rebuilding your air-cooled Porsche engine, it’s important to use the right sealant on the cylinder bases, even if you are using base gaskets or the cylinder is o-ringed, and especially when using shims to correct deck height. Although Elring Curil T or even K2 has been the choice for many engine builders, we’ve heard great things about Dow Corning 730 other than how expensive it is, so it’s certainly worth a look.
As most aircooled engines do not have head gaskets or flame rings to positively seal combustion pressure, it’s critical that the cylinder head sealing surface is properly resurfaced during the rebuild. Although our Nickies aircooled cylinders all have precision machined surfaces, some choose to lap the cylinders into their heads and many use Permatex’s Copper Spray-A-Gasket high temp sealant to lightly coat the sealing surfaces on the heads to help form a carbon seal.
If you haven’t read our engine assembly guides, we certainly recommend downloading them before embarking on any rebuild. There is a lot of great information provided there to help ensure a successful rebuild for your Porsche engine.
