AAUW Laguna Beach Adopts

New State Program:

Gov Trek

The Branch has decided to adopt the new AAUW California program Gov Trek and will be rolling it out to our scholarships high schools and to members of the Tech Trek Alumnae Group (TTAG). This virtual program for high school junior and senior girls is designed to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in public service and elected office. This is a wonderful opportunity to add value to our community schools and to raise our visibility in the community. Watch for more updates on Gov Trek and opportunities to participate as volunteers during the program.

For any questions on Gov Trek or how you can get involved, please contact:

Vivian Clecak (Dana Hills HS), Esther Hessong (TTAG), Nancy Miller (Laguna Beach HS), or Sigrid Moranz (Estancia HS).

Book Review:

Seating Arrangements

by Maggie Shipstead

NewYork Times bestseller and winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Literary Luncheon author Maggie Shipstead’s book Seating Arrangements is an irresistible story of a summer New England weekend gone awry. It is a deliciously biting satirical glimpse into the lives of the well-bred and ill-behaved. The Van Meters have gathered at their family retreat to celebrate the marriage of daughter Daphne—seven months pregnant—to the impeccably appropriate Greyson Duff. The weekend is full of champagne, salt air, and practiced bonhomie, but long-buried discontent and simmering lust stir beneath the surface of this summery romp. Shipstead’s weave of wit and observation continually delights the reader.

Breaking Barriers

Senior Bella Rasmussen is a running back on the LBHS varsity football team, the Breakers. She made California history in October as the first girl to score two touchdowns in a varsity high school game, and this month she helped the Breakers win the CIF championships for the first time in 76 years! And Bella is not the only girl playing for the Breakers, either. Freshman Mitzi Ostrick is on the JV team!

A recent episode of the podcast, The Stadium Talk, includes Bella speaking about her experience as a girl playing high school football, and how younger girls have responded to her making history (at minute 2:30).
