Plain Language Legal Glossary

a pile of books and magnifying glass

This glossary contains a list of legal words with definitions in plain language. It is meant to help youth better understand these words that often come up when talking about guardianship, supported decision-making, and alternatives to guardianship. The glossary is available in multiple formats: PDF, CYVYC webpage, video channel.

For Everyone

Comic Audio Story

Comic book cover for Thinking For Me

Giancarlo Vicari, Youth Ambassador from New Jersey, created a comic called “Thinking for Me” about turning 18 and talking to your parents about alternatives to guardianship. We helped make Giancarlo's comic into a 5-minute audio story narrated by Giancarlo and his friends. This audio story is a great resource to share with anyone interested in learning more about supported decision-making and alternatives to guardianship!

Video Resources

This page has a variety of videos about alternatives to guardianship, supported decision-making, and transfer-of-rights. Videos include archived webinars for parents and special educators and educational material for self-advocates.

National Presentations

CYVYC presented with the Texas State Team leaders, including Youth Ambassador Matthew Leos, at the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities last month. CYVYC also recorded a presentation for the virtual annual Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) conference, which will be held on September 11 and 12, 2024, highlighting the work of its third round of State Teams. Presenters included each of the State Team’s organizational co-leads and their youth leaders, Claire Adams from Arizona, Kason Erwin from Texas, and Otto Lana from California. 2024 Speaker Series for Educators Continuing this Fall

In April, CYVYC launched the kick-off webinar for our Speaker Series for Educators Exploring Alternatives to Guardianship for Students with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities. The webinar recordings are available for anyone who missed it

CYVYC will hold two more sessions of its 4-part Speaker Series this fall so keep an eye out for announcements! The session’s speakers will include young adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) and content experts from CYVYC.

Florida Gets a Supported Decision-Making Law

On June 14, 2024, the Florida Governor signed Supported Decision-Making into law. Florida joins the 26 other states and the District of Columbia that have passed laws recognizing supported decision-making agreements or requiring courts to consider supported decision-making as a less restrictive option. Learn more about the law.

Legislation Introduced to Promote Alternatives to Guardianship

Senator Casey (D-PA) and Representative Gay Scanlon (D-PA-5) have introduced the Alternatives to Guardianship Education Act (S. 4283 / H.R. 8328). The bill is intended to increase awareness of alternatives to guardianship, like supported decision-making, and fund education programs to provide information and resources to healthcare workers, educators, family members, and court personnel. The bill was referred to the House Education and Workforce Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Read the bill or track its progress.

Supported Decision-Making Video

Derek Heard, a Youth Ambassador from Georgia, created a 24-minute video about his supported decision-making journey. In this video, Derek and his mom explain Derek’s supported decision-making journey in terms of riding in different seat positions in a car. CYVYC condensed the video to 14 minutes, making it a great resource for educators to share with their students, parents and supporters!
