Innovation Lessons for Canada from BlackBerry's Legacy

In Peter Armstrong’s recent CBC article “Do you miss your BlackBerry? Canada’s innovation sector does too,” the author says the new movie Blackberry about the rise and fall of Canadian innovation giant Research in Motion (RiM) highlights gaping holes in Canada’s innovation policy.

The story of RiM is also the story of Canada’s innovation policy shortcomings, particularly evident in the wake of the decline of tech giants Rim and Nortel.

Unlike Silicon Valley, where the collapse of major companies like Sun Microsystems led to the emergence of numerous smaller companies and a redistribution of resources, Canada saw no such resurgence.

“If you actually look at many of the best resources that used to belong to Nortel, and BlackBerry, they belong now to Huawei,” says Dan Breznitz, Chair of Innovation Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

Armstrong's article “Do you miss your BlackBerry?" is the perfect complement to the movie Blackberry, an entertaining and informative chronicle of the meteoric rise and catastrophic demise of RiM, now in theatres.

SIPP Economic Development Director on the Vital Role of Commercial Areas

Commercial areas, like downtowns, urban villages and mainstreets, have faced tremendous stress over the last few years and continue to face hardships due to trends such as remote/hybrid work and inflation. But these areas remain vital to regional economies, which means collaborative approaches between Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) and regional economic development organizations are needed to help ensure they thrive through these post-pandemic changes.

This was the central message of SIPP Director of Economic Development Dallas Gislason’s keynote to the Business Improvement Areas of B.C. (BIABC) Conference in Victoria on May 3.

“Commercial areas do things that other areas (like residential-only neighbourhoods) do not,” Gislason said in his presentation BIAs in the Regional Post-Pandemic Prosperity Playbook. “They offer a density of rich cultural and culinary experiences, unique retail experiences and places for valuable unexpected or impromptu connections with acquaintances. The magic of serendipity can never strike from the home office!”

Uber's Ride-Sharing Service Approved for Victoria

After years of trying to get approval to operate in Victoria, the ridesharing service Uber has received the go-ahead from the Passenger Transporation Board (PTB) to enter the local market.

Thanks to a license transfer from ReRyde, which never set up operations in Victoria, Uber is now making plans to launch the service here and in Kelowna.

Uber, which currently operates its UberEats service in Greater Victoria, has been trying to bring its services to the region since 2020 without success. In its 60-page decision, the PTB said the application "generated significant interest from the industry." Supporters included Victoria International Airport, Destination Greater Victoria, MADD Canada, BC Tech and Harbour Air.
