New School Weekly Update

September 3 - 6, 2024

Welcome to your weekly source of updates, news, and reminders!

Go PlaySave Fundraiser

This week, we’re launching one of our top fundraisers—Go Play Save! This coupon book provides over $12,500 in local savings. Each student will receive a book along with instructions on how to place an order. If you prefer not to receive a book, please submit the opt-out form by tomorrow at noon.

Participating in this fundraiser is a win-win, offering valuable savings for families while supporting various school initiatives. Proceeds will fund playground upgrades and campus enhancements. We truly appreciate your participation and support!

Campus Improvement Plan

Many thanks to everyone who supported our campus improvement plan last year! Thanks to your support and donations, we've successfully connected to the town's utilities (after several years of effort), added new outdoor educational spaces, repaired a bridge spanning our creek, constructed a shaded deck, and installed a stroller-friendly walkway along the south end of the building. Next week, responding to enthusiastic student requests, we'll also be installing a gaga ball pit on the main field.

Future plans include expanding trails, enhancing playground and PE equipment, and increasing accessibility to our natural areas and creek.

After-school Clubs

Our after-school clubs are starting in the next few weeks! Be sure to register for classes on our after-school club page soon, as spaces fill up quickly.

Some of our clubs are run by outside vendors, so please direct all communications and questions to the contact information they provide. Other clubs are organized by our teachers and staff, whose contact details can be found on our after-school club page.

Enhancement Classes

The week after Labor Day marks the official start of our enhancement classes. While we integrate many of these topics into our students' daily programming, we also invite specialized teachers to enrich these areas further. Below is a quick overview of scheduled classes:

Music, PE, and Woodworking

We’re thrilled to have Mr. Art leading our music and PE curriculum for EY, CH, LE, UE, and MAP students. Not only is Mr. Art an accomplished musician with a history of opening for several bands, but he also brings over 20 years of experience teaching drums, music theory, and percussion to students of all ages. His passion for music and dedication to fostering self-expression in students is truly inspiring. Mr. Art is also offering private after-school drumming lessons—email art@montessoricenter.org for more details.

We’re also impressed by Mr. Art's group-building approach to outdoor movement and PE classes. Adding to his list of talents, Mr. Art will also continue to lead the UE / MAP woodworking and construction electives.

Spanish

We’re excited to welcome Ms. Mary Murman, a native Spanish speaker who was raised in Argentina with over 20 years of teaching experience.

Ms. Mary will lead our Spanish program for EY and older students. Learning a new language not only boosts cognitive skills but also broadens global perspectives by fostering an appreciation of different cultures. We're thrilled to introduce this new program to our students.

To further enhance your child's foreign language skills, consider enrolling them in Ms. Iris's after-school Spanish club! As our CH4 teacher and a native speaker from Honduras, Ms. Iris offers an immersive learning experience that your child won't want to miss. Please email Ms. Iris for additional information on this club.

Art

We are thrilled to welcome back Ms. Julie Stumpf as our elementary art teacher! Ms. Julie has not only consistently delivered an impressive and inspiring art curriculum, but she also spearheads events such as the Glow Gallery and our new online student art site (for all ages) at Artsonia. Stay tuned for more information on her upcoming activities and events.

Sign Language

As part of our language program, we’re excited to share that Ms. Laurel will continue offering sign-language classes for our EY through LE students. Sign language is a valuable skill that engages both kinesthetic and language centers of the brain, enhancing overall learning and communication.

Our Nido teachers also incorporate sign language into their programming to support and enhance language development.

Nature Education

Offered by Ms. Rachel from the Dragonfly Program, students in EY and older will enjoy monthly lessons on nature and environmental studies, featuring hands-on activities and interactions with live animals and plants.

Chess

Hosted by Coach Jonathan, an International Chess Master and owner of Dragon Knight Chess, and coach Paul, we're excited to introduce chess as an enhancement class for our UE students.

Chess not only boosts critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills but also encourages concentration, patience, and perseverance.

For children in CH (age 5) and older, the TNS chess club offers an opportunity to dive into the game, develop their skills, and participate in tournaments. Regardless of your child's skill level or exposure to the game, we invite you to enroll your child in our TNS Chess Club.

School Event Updates

With often so many sibling and events to manage, keeping up with school and classroom updates can be a challenge. If your inbox is anything like mine, finding these updates and announcements can feel overwhelming!

To assist with this, we are continuing our efforts to improve our Parent Resource page. New this year, we are also introducing a School Events page in addition to enhancing our School Calendar page. These resources will provide details on our main events and regular activities. As many of these events are managed by committees, please note that details are still pending and will be updated soon.

For quick access, simply click on the icon (selected below) in the header of your browser when visiting our website, whether on desktop or mobile, to reach the Parent Resource page.

I hope you all enjoyed your Labor Day weekend!

Best wishes,

Julie
