Though the end of summer weather seems to be nowhere in sight, the start of a new school year is already here. Which means it is already time for our annual Back to School special edition that provides you with the information you need to get ready for classes.
New laws that impact our kids
Many education-related bills that impact students with disabilities passed in this year's state legislative session. Our latest blog post, New Rules in Schools for 2023, gives more details on the following plus other new laws. Some of the new bills passed that we want to make you aware of:
-
House Bill 3928 improves special education services for students with Dyslexia and related disorders.
-
Senate Bill 133 now limits law enforcement and school security personnel in the use of physical force and restraint techniques on elementary students.
-
A major provision of recently passed House Bill 473 adds to a 2019 law that created school threat assessment teams. Now those teams must involve the parents of the student being assessed.
-
House Bill 3 addresses physical security and safety of public schools and includes several requirements such as new guidance on emergency plans for students with disabilities and more.
All of the above legislation becomes effective for the 2023-2024 school year. Remember to see our latest blog post for more details on these and other new laws.
