FOOD WASTE: WHY IT MATTERS

Roughly one-third of food produced is wasted, both globally and in the United States, contributing to the growing crisis of climate change, environmental degradation, and loss of biological diversity even as food insecurity rises. Reducing food waste is a key step individuals can take to shrink their carbon footprint and save money at the same time. EcoAction Arlington’s Food Waste Reduction Campaign will offer tips and inspiration to make progress within our community.

ARLINGTON'S FOOD SCRAP PROGRAM

Composting food scraps helps the environment in several ways, including reducing greenhouse gasses and reducing the amount of materials that would otherwise be sent to landfills or incinerators; food scraps are one of the largest and heaviest parts of the waste stream, and recovering them can be more cost-effective than disposing of them; creating a valuable soil amendment used to improve soil health, prevent erosion, conserve water, and promote plant growth. You can turn your food scraps into compost with Arlington's new Food Scraps Program. See how it works in this 30-second video.

Over the summer, the EcoAction Arlington Tree Ambassadors held a series of informational sessions in the Barcroft, Arlington Mill, and Glencarlyn neighborhoods, all of which participate in the Tree Canopy Equity Program. These sessions were designed to be educational, focusing on the numerous benefits of trees, identifying species that would thrive on specific properties, and providing guidance on proper tree maintenance. The Ambassadors worked closely with residents, answering questions and offering personalized advice to ensure the trees planted would be well-suited to their environments. Connecting with neighbors in these communities was an incredibly rewarding experience, as it allowed the Ambassadors to build strong, supportive relationships within the neighborhoods. This outreach not only educated residents but also strengthened community ties.

Canvassing in Aurora Highlands

We expanded our efforts county-wide through a partnership with Amazon, where their volunteers canvassed Aurora Highlands to promote the tree planting program.

Salsa in the Park at Long Branch Nature Center

Summertime fun was also had by all at Salsa in the Park at the Long Branch Nature Center. Laughter and the sound of music filled the air as we discussed the benefits of trees while our community partners showcased their dance moves and children enjoyed face painting.

Arlington County Fair

EcoAction Arlington was pleased to be back in the booth at the Arlington County Fair. Volunteers and Board Members (pictured: Board Member Levi Novey and volunteer Adam Theo) greeted the public and shared our mission and sustainable practices with them.
