"Textured Landscapes: A Journey Through Nature"

November 10th - 21st

Chris Allaway

Immersed in the tranquility of nature, Chris finds solace whether navigating the trails of the Georgian Bay area, Banff and British Columbia or simply unwinding amidst the great outdoors. A self-taught fabric and textile artist, Chris has dedicated a decade to honing her craft, skillfully fashioning realistic landscape art.

At first glance, Chris' art resembles a painting, captivating viewers who are surprised to realize it's meticulously crafted from small pieces of fabric. Each piece is a testament to her unique approach, expertly layering, stitching, and stretching fabric on canvas. In a community rich with visual artists, Chris' work stands out for its distinct and innovative methodology.

A little bit about Julia

Do you prefer working with certain themes or subjects?

Generally I enjoy working with landscapes and flowers and sometimes people. I particularly enjoy painting wedding bouquets as a special remembrance.

What is your creative process?

I usually paint from pictures that I have taken from walks or travels; such as sunsets from Bayfield or the the Rail Trail in St. Marys. I usually paint subjects and colours that I would hang in my house as sometimes they stay hanging until I make all the changes that I want. I usually use one of my photographs and may research other similar shots that have techniques that I like. I do an underpainting, working on my lights and darks and then start applying my colours. In the past, I worked exclusively with a palette knife but now I go back and forth between my palette knife and brush. Once I think my painting is finished, I will hang it where I can see it and then add anything else that I think it needs.

What mediums do you work with.

Although I have tried most mediums all of my "serious" paintings I complete in oil. I enjoy the flexibility of the medium and I feel there are so many techniques to learn within the medium.

Julia volunteers regularly at the ArtwithPanache Gallery and usually has artwork there. She is the newsletter and webpage editor. She is also an member of the Stonetown Arts Group and participates in the annual November Show.

Julia is available for wedding bouquet commission pieces.
