New Start Times for the 2022-23 School Year

We are writing to update you on important matters regarding school start times for the 2022-2023 school year at Da Vinci Design, Da Vinci Communications and Da Vinci Science.

Three years ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill No. 328 which would prohibit high schools from starting classes before 8:30 a.m., effective at the start of the 2022-2023 school year. We are fortunate that our Da Vinci high schools have always started school between 8:15 a.m. and 8:55 a.m. to promote students’ physical and mental well-being, and so the change is not as pronounced as it is for many other high schools. In order to accommodate a new start time of no earlier than 8:30 a.m., the following start times will be implemented for the 2022-2023 school year:
Please note that end times are approximate for most days and may be adjusted for professional development and special schedule days. School leadership and staff have met extensively to explore possibilities and discuss potential impacts of the new law, including having all schools start at the same time each day. It is not possible for all three high schools to start at the same time due to the traffic flow of the campus and capacity of the programs in the building. In fairness to all schools and stakeholders, the order of the start times for each school has been adjusted for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. (It should be noted that the current order of school start times has been in place since Fall 2017). No decisions have been made for the 2023-24 school year or beyond.

We respect that the impact of SB 328 on students, families and staff could be significant. As such, at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, we will engage in a process of gathering feedback from all school stakeholders about the actual impact of the start time change. All stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the start times at our 201 N. Douglas schools for the 2023-24 school year and beyond. After input from all stakeholders has been considered, we will make an informed final recommendation to the Da Vinci Schools Board of Trustees for approval no later than February 2023.
