Qigong and Cognitive Health
We are all aware that exercise is correlated with health and longevity but did you know that it also prevents cognitive decline? When we think of exercise we typically think of walking, cardiovascular or resistance training; however, in recent studies, Qigong surpassed all these forms of exercise in the area of cognitive function. A new analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials found that Qigong was associated with a more significant increase in a protein linked to memory, mood, and brain health called BDNF.
BDNF
BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) supports neuron growth and plays a role in how well your memory functions. It also supports your emotional health and mood. So, why does Qigong outperform other forms of exercise in BDNF production? Researchers believe that the focused attention and meditative movements associated with Qigong may reduce stress hormones that suppress BDNF production. They also hypothesize that Qigong activates neural pathways that support BDNF through the mindful harmonization of breath with movement.
Qigong
The truth is, we don’t need randomized controlled trials to know that our Qigong practice generates feelings of peace and wellbeing, while improving our ability to focus. When we feel happy and content, our nervous system moves from stress to relaxation mode. When we train our attention, our mind clears and we feel less scattered. When we soften our movements, we experience less tension in our body.
Awareness
Qigong has the potential to bear many gifts; however, in my opinion one of the greatest gifts our practice offers is self-awareness. Awareness is a primary key in healing. If you are not aware of compensatory patterns in your body, how can you shift them? If you are not aware you are being emotionally reactive, how can you stop yourself? If you are not aware of self-judgement and self-criticism, how can you learn to be more kind to yourself?
Feeling = Healing
Whatever we think, believe and bring our awareness to is what we sense, feel and become. Qigong teaches us to accept our body and release compensatory patterns, while creating new adaptations and neural pathways. The practice helps us to be present rather than worry about the future or obsess about the past. Qigong teaches us to be kind to ourselves and others. It helps us recognize and be grateful for the abundance we have in our lives, rather than focus on what we are lacking.
Connection
I invite you to join me and experience the magic of Qigong. When we practice together, we create an energetic field of community and support. I practice Qigong to cultivate and refine my body, mind and spirit, and I teach these classes because it's my joy to share this experience with all of you. When our intention is to heal ourselves, we simultaneously spread healing to those around us. When we sincerely share our love and support with others, we feel more loved and supported. When we share what we brings us joy, that energy resonates and heals. I have so much gratitude for this practice and the healing it’s created in my life. I truly hope each of you have the opportunity to experience these gifts for yourselves.
