A Comprehensive Interpretive Master Plan for the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian
Matt Kirchman, of ObjectIDEA, has completed a Comprehensive Interpretive Master Plan for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. The plan identifies a structure of messaging and implementation strategies for both the Washington D.C. and New York City museums. Completed entirely on-line during the Covid-19 pandemic, planning was a highly collaborative and dialogic process involving over 30 museum staff in a series of interviews and workshops. The resulting set of innovative “intellectual journeys for visitors” articulated in the plan will guide future exhibits and public programs toward NMAI’s ultimate goal for engagement: to enhance visitors’ cultural literacy as a pathway to social justice for Native peoples.

Mac West Participates in Several Virtual Events
Mac West was one of seven members of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of The Explorers Club to present in an online feature on May 6. He discussed the arc of his scientific work in Pakistan. In the late 70s and early 80s, West conducted exploratory paleontology work in Cenozoic sediments on the southern flank of the Himalayas. The main outcome was the description of Pakicetus attocki, a significant organism in the evolution of whales from terrestrial to aquatic. Today, he is the advisor to The Dawood Foundation which is developing the MagnifiScience Centre in Karachi, the first full science center in the country.
As a member of the Rotary Club of Denver, West produced a May 13 panel discussion for its approximately 100 members entitled “Impact of COVID-19 on Museums in Denver and Beyond”. It was led by Denver Museum of Nature & Science President/CEO George Sparks. The other panelists were Nora Burnett Abrams, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Mike Yankovich, President of the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marisco Campus, and Claudia Moran-Pichardo, Director of the Museo de las Americas.
