Councilman Lauds Work of Local Organizations, Announces New Projects Happening in Northern Manhattan

Continuing his steadfast commitment to transparency, councilman announces programs funded in FY '14 at public meeting

New York, NY-On Tuesday, June 23rd, 2013, NY City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez hosted a Post-Budget Meeting at Isabella Geriatric Center, located at 515 Audubon Ave, NY, NY 10040 to discuss the many organizations, projects and initiatives he allocated money to for Fiscal Year 2014.

At the meeting, the Councilman outlined how funding he has provided to various organizations through his discretionary and capital budgets will be spent, allowing for several groups to discuss their plans for the coming year. In particular, he focused on how all of the local organizations who have received funding fit into a larger plan for District 10: Education. He stressed that from groups receiving funding to support immigrant services and domestic violence prevention to tenant advocacy groups; each played a big role in educating the community thereby empowering individuals to learn and advocate for themselves.

Continuing with his efforts to provide capital funding to every school and senior center in the district that made a request, the allocations by Ydanis Rodriguez in this year's budget will see new technology upgrades, AC installations and a renovated sports bubble at schools across the district. In addition to these, he also allocated funding some key projects such as the renovations of the High Bridge Water Tower and the creation of a girls swimming team at George Washington High School Campus through the help of Trident Swim Foundation.

This meeting furthered Ydanis Rodriguez's commitment to transparency, which has been a hallmark of his time in office. It provided a unique opportunity to residents and members of local organizations to hear about the work others are doing, as well as discuss their own efforts.

Another notable project that received funding this year is the creation of a telecommunications hub available to any group in Northern Manhattan at the Isabella Geriatric Center. Isabella President and CEO Mark Kator spoke of the importance of offering this space to the community as space is something that is often lacking for groups looking to meet and hold events.

Mr. Rodriguez is also proud to have secured funding for the New York Restoration Project's restoration of the Peter J. Sharp Boat House after it was damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Amy Freitag, Executive Director of NYRP spoke about the work her non-profit organization is doing, through its dedication to renovating open space in underserved communities to create a greener New York City. With their help, the Northern Manhattan community is developing and growing more sustainable. And also standing to benefit from this renovation is Row New York, an organization that combines academic excellence with rowing so that kids have fun in the water while learning a great deal. The organization has a high school graduation rate of over 90% and will continue to have a tremendous impact on Washington Heights and Inwood.
