From Principal Jon
Dear TC,

June is finally here and it is full of fun events! We had an incredible Talents Night on Friday and I am so thankful for all of the families, staff, and the students that worked so hard to put this event together. We have a month full of camps, field day, and expedition night!  So let’s take the month of June to celebrate our students and the end the year on a positive note!

We are looking forward to hearing from our 5 th  graders during their panels about everything they have learned at Thornton Creek and how they will take their learning and apply it in their future endeavors! We are also welcoming new families into our school on June 12 th . Thank you in advance to the staff and families that have volunteered to answer questions and talk about how amazing our school is!

Thank you to the families and staff that have provided helpful input into the CSIP (Continuous School Improvement Plan)! Lastly, this is a friendly reminder that the Chief Financial Officer and the legal department will be presenting the audit recommendations and next steps for our school and community on June 5 th  from 5-6:30 pm.

Have a great week everyone!

Jon
Community Meeting to Understand Recent Audit Results
Earlier this year our school underwent an internal audit. The audit covered a wide range of areas in our school ranging from cash handling, to hiring, to field trips. The internal audit was followed up by a state audit and the state has recently completed their report and sent it to the central office.

Central office staff, including the CFO and legal department, will be coming to Thornton Creek on June 5 th  from 5-6:30 p.m to go over the recommendations and next steps and how this will impact our school moving forward.

OTTER Award nominees announced for 2019-2020
This year, our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders enjoyed reading the 6 nominees:  Catstronauts: Mission Moon Game Over, Super Rabbit Boy  (Press Start),  Dragons and Marshmallows  (Zoey and Sassafrass),  Jasmine Toguchi, Mochi Queen Dolphin Rescue  (Animal Planet Adventures) and  March of the Mini Beasts  (DATA Project) .  These “books kids want to read not books adults think kids  should  read” have opened up new reading horizons for many of our students. The  new nominees for 2020  have been announced! I recently received a small grant from the Seattle Education Foundation to purchases multiple copies of each title for next year! Having 10 copies per book will allow many more kids access to their favorite books!

2020 Soda Float List is  here !
The Soda Float titles have been released! I’m talking to all 3-4-5 classes about the Challenge and the books. The forms are available in the library, and each student is receiving a form to take home. While we don’t have all titles or many copies of the titles we do have – yet—now is a good time to put a few on hold at SPL for summer reading! 5th graders will want to look at these books as well as they will be on many lists for middle school too. I’m working individual classes on putting SPL books on hold.

Seattle Public Library Summer of Learning
Erica Delavan visits June 6 to talk to our students about the  Summer of Learning ! Get ready for Seattle School Librarian summer reading lists too—coming June 7!

Final Due Date for library books is June 17 (June 18 for staff) –.
Help me by helping your child get his/her books returned by that date. June 17 (June 18 for staff).
From Thornton Creek Site Council
Site Council Election Coming Soon!
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to lead in Site Council for the 2019-2020 school year! Our new bylaws mandate that an election be held every year, even if no position is contested. Exercising this democratic process is a way for us to reach out to the whole community, so that all voices can be informed and heard. It is a way for us to work together, build community, and have our voices counted.

What’s Next?
  • We are working to confirm all nominees, and collect statements for a Special Edition Newsletter to be sent out soon! All nominees are invited to send their statements to [email protected] asap.
  • Voting will begin June 5th - Check your inbox for your personal ballot link via Survey Monkey (be sure to check your spam box!). Or you can opt to use a paper ballot instead. Paper ballots, and ballot box will be in the office.
  • Voting closes on Monday June 17th at 8 am.
  • After the voting closes, results will be tallied with a neutral 3rd party witness, and results will be sent by Special Edition Newsletter.

**If you added your name to the online form, but did not email [email protected] , please do so by midnight tonight. Without this step, you are not eligible to be on the ballot!**
Thank you!
Talents Night was stupendous, thanks to the leadership of Mark Cooper, and a group of volunteers including backstage crew (Stacey, Jacob, Kirsten, Rosemary, Leslie, Mardi), sound tech - Jamie, fourth grade volunteers working stage and lights, fifth grade emcees, and pizza sales organized by Cassie! We hope everyone enjoyed the show and that more people will be inspired to assist these legacy events at TC.
Volunteers Needed now for June Events!
Athletics Skills Night is this Friday, June 7  beginning at 6pm, and if you plan to attend it would be super helpful to have extra hands for set-up and tear-down. Please consider lending even fifteen minutes of time because many hands make light work!  Sign up right here.

New Family Orientation is June 12th. We are l ooking for parent volunteers for a new family orientation event on Wednesday, June 12, from 6:30-7:30 pm. You will just need to hang out and answer questions/share TC experiences. You can find information and sign up at this link .

Field Day is coming up on June 18th! If you've never experienced it before, it's a great time, and a fantastic volunteer opportunity! Please check out the SignUp Genius to secure a spot running a station for the kids. As our school has grown, so has our need for volunteers... we can't do it without you! It's always a fun day, and you won't want to miss out. Please sign up today!

Hiring Training is good for a Lifetime!
Parents CAN be involved in hiring new Teachers and Staff! So far this year, we've identified parents for several committees, and as we grow, we are doing much more hiring. There has not been a lot of notice for getting together hiring teams, so we need to have people trained up and ready to go.

It's likely that positions will come up this summer, so p lease consider getting trained up this June! This is a once in a lifetime training, meaning you'll never have to take it again, for as long as you're in a Seattle Public School! It lasts forever.

There are two upcoming district training opportunities*:

  • Thursday, June 6th, 4-5pm at John Stanford Center**
  • Tuesday, June 18th, 4-5pm at John Stanford Center**

* To RSVP for the training, contact [email protected]
** For Directions to the John Stanford Center, click here .

Check out the TC Hiring webpage for more information. And once you've taken the training, please let us know at [email protected] ! Thank you!

From the Bike Committee
Greetings,

Bike to School Month is finished, but you can still submit your minutes for the month!  The deadline to submit is Thursday 6/6/2019. See below for details on how to submit, and prizes available.

Here is a recap of the month and a look ahead to future plans:

PRIZES
  • Our school collective goal is 40,000 minutes and 40% participation, and the reward is a school wide cookie day in class if we meet that goal! We are only at 50%, but I know many of you have not submitted yet.
  • You can log minutes of riding through May 31st via this google form.
  • Alternatively, return a paper calendar with minutes written on it via Kid Mail (sent home at the beginning of the month, or print and use this calendar).
  • The third option to submit minutes is scan your calendar (or take a photo) and email it to Tristan Osborn (email address below)
  • Submitting ANY minutes qualifies you to win prizes, including Seattle Storm tickets, water bottle holders, tune-ups from Mend Bicycles, and other prizes from Cascade Bicycle Club.
  • Deadline to submit minutes is Thursday 6/6/2019.

RECAP
  • We counted almost 70 riders on Friday April 26th (the first day for the Bike Fairy).
  • We handed out approximately 120 sets of bike lights (front/rear).
  • We gave out approximately 170 popsicles on Wednesday May 8th (National Bike to School Day).
  • We handed out additional small freebies, and organized the bike trains on Fridays through the end of May.

FUTURE PLANS
  • As many have noticed, bicycle parking was completely overfilled on peak riding days. We are exploring grants to pay for the installation of more bike racks.
  • Next year to kick off bicycling season we hope to coordinate a bicycle skills rodeo, a fun way for students to improve their bicycle handling and safety awareness skills.
  • Next year we may sponsor "Ride to the Park Wednesdays," where parent volunteer riders would accompany students after school to a nearby park such as View Ridge Playfield.
  • Please email me with comments, questions, feedback, or additional suggestions for Bike Month.

Ride Safely!

Barbecue Smith , a Texas-style barbecue restaurant in Maple Leaf with some of the best ribs around and a beer list curated by Chuck of Chuck's Hop Shop, is hosting a fundraising day for TC on Wednesday, June 5, 12:00-9:30 p.m. They'll donate 20 percent of net TC sales that day to the TC Parent Group. Summer Book Drive through June 7th
Thanks to all who have donated books already to the Sacajawea Elementary School summer reading book drive!

Through June 7th we will continue to collect books to distribute to the program. Books can dropped off at the TC office. Thank you very much!

We have roughly 50 books collected so far!

The goal is to get two (or more) books into each child’s hands. Read aloud picture books, early readers through middle readers (chapter books like the first few Harry Potters, A Wrinkle in Time etc).

Sharing your child’s favorite books is a great way to pollinate the love of literature and ideas to other families. and donating is an easy conversation starter in your own family about community and sharing.
Last PTA meeting of the year!
Join TC PTA on Sunday, June 16 from 2-4pm  for an ice cream social at our last general meeting of the school year. We'll bring the ice cream, you bring a topping to share. Stay tuned for details on location. We'll celebrate our first year, elect next year's officers and raise our cones to the dads for Father's Day. All are welcome!
