- The Fall Book Fair at Third Place Books needs volunteers to drop off snacks at school, and/or provide on-location assistance. Sign up here for Fall Book Fair.
- Lunchroom volunteers are welcome any day. No need to commit to a weekly schedule, just stop by and help pass out milk cartons, or provide an extra hand with tables.

As we move from a rainy October to a rainy November, I'm sending warm wishes to our community members observing Día de los Muertos. Stay dry out there as you celebrate! We are looking forward to a delightful Harvest Festival at school this Friday. Families are welcome to attend as visitors or to volunteer. Check in with your child's teacher for details. The next Site Council meeting will be on Tuesday, November 12th, 6:30-8:30pm. Please email me by Friday, Nov 1, if you have an item that you would like to add to the agenda. At the October meeting (
draft minutes
), we brainstormed a
list of topics
that families would like to hear more about. If you couldn't be there, add your own questions or ideas at the bottom under "MORE QUESTIONS AND IDEAS". Staff will use this to prepare information to share at future Site Council meetings and other venues.
Last thing: A couple of parents have stepped up to help TC families connect with other TC families in their neighborhood. If you'd like to connect, shoot me an email. Look for more from them to facilitate connections in the future.

Parent Ed: What is Thornton Creek?
Monday, Nov 4th
6:30-8:30 in the Commons
Back by popular demand! Especially if you're new to Thornton Creek, do not miss this event! What does it mean to give your child a Thornton Creek education? What makes TC different from your assignment school? What do all these acronyms (EL, RC, etc) mean? What the heck is an Expedition? How do we assess achievement and prepare students for middle school? This fun, informative event brings teachers and parents together to get in the weeds of What To Expect...When You're At Thornton Creek. Bring your questions and join us!

You will begin receiving bi-monthly messages from your room parents about all-school events, such as our upcoming Harvest Festival and Fall Book Fair, that will keep you updated on what's happening at Thornton Creek. Room parents partner with teachers to build community in the classrooms and across grade bands. We are super grateful for their year-long volunteerism!

Harvest Festival is Friday Nov 1!
(from 10-14-19)
|
Harvest Festival is a great annual TC tradition and we need volunteers! Every year the 4th and 5th graders host the younger grades for a fun day of carnival games in the upstairs hallways and classrooms. Activities start around 10am. Older buddies help the younger students navigate and play, and everyone is treated to fresh popped popcorn to celebrate the Fall Harvest season. If you are a 4th of 5th grade parent, stay tuned for emails from your teacher or room parent about how you can help your room's events both in the coming weeks and on the day of the event. Younger grades will need parent support to help get kids in and out of the costumes they may choose to wear, and help with getting the little ones through the carnival as well.
We need lots of parents to help
run the popcorn machine and deliver bags of popcorn to each room (it's SO MUCH POPCORN!), from 8am till 1pm, and we need volunteers to help clean up at the end of the day. Lots of hands make quick work and after this dynamic and creative day, there is much to clean so that our teachers can go home for the weekend knowing their rooms are back to normal for the coming week of learning. Please see the Sign Up Genius

Harvest Festival is a fun fall festival, and also the day when students and staff may choose to enjoy wearing costumes! Please note our school’s Costume and Photo guidelines, so everyone can have a Happy Halloween!
- Costumes are optional and they should be brought to change into separately; please do not have your student wear their costume to school.
- Please help your child to select a costume that is not violent in nature – violence is inappropriate at school and other children can be frightened by blood and gore representations. No weapons of any kind will be allowed at school.
- Please help your child select a costume that is culturally sensitive and respectful. As a school community, we wish to acknowledge that cultures, ethnicities, and the traditions, clothing, and physical features associated with them are not costumes to be tried on for a day. As such, please avoid costumes that represent a non-specific person from a culture or ethnicity (e.g. Native American, Geisha) or that involve your child changing their physical features to mimic the features of a different ethnicity (e.g. skin paint, wigs that imitate natural black hair).
- For safety reasons, please do not include masks or other face coverings that make your child not easily recognizable. This includes face painting.
- Adult/Parent costumes (if worn at all) should follow the same guidelines
- If you are not sure whether a particular costume is appropriate for school, we encourage you to consult with your child’s teacher
REMINDER: Digital pictures are so easy to take and this celebration is so colorful. Please feel free to post photos of your own child(ren), but DO NOT POST OR SHARE photos that include anyone else (children or adults).

Parent Enrichment Event
Thursday, November 14th, 6:30-8:30pm
Thornton Creek Music Room
Carrie Basas, Director of the Washington State Governor’s Office of the Education Ombuds (OEO), will present.
The OEO believes in the values of ombuds work: impartiality, independence, confidentiality, and informality. They bring schools, families, and communities together for collaborative problem-solving.
In 2006, the Washington State Legislature passed House Bill 3127 to establish the OEO to reduce the opportunity gap by supporting families, students, educators, and communities in understanding the public K-12 education system and resolving concerns collaboratively. The legislature placed them within the Governor’s Office to ensure their independence from the public education system.
Carrie's presentation will include:
1. Introduction to the OEO
2. Family partnerships: advocacy and engagement
a. Disability identity and inclusion
b. Strategies for creating inclusive and welcoming communities
c. How we can all play a role as families, educators, peers, and parents
3. Brief outline of the IEP process
All Thornton Creek parents, caregivers, staff are welcome. This event is hosted by Special Education Committee. Childcare is available. Please email
special-education@thorntoncreek.org
with the names and ages of your children by November 12th.

Outing at El Centro de la Raza for Dia De Los Muertos
THIS Friday, November 1st
TC PTA is looking forward to connecting in this fun gathering for Dia de los Muertos! Participation provides an opportunity for families to come together and learn something new about a different culture which will be an exciting enriching experience for all. Cultural exposure is highly beneficial for children in strengthening and building their interpersonal skills set. Plan on leaving around 5pm from the Wedgwood area if you are driving. If anyone wants to carpool and/or ride the light rail
email
Christina, or call 1(206) 486-0063. We will likely leave a bit earlier (4 or 4:30) and park at the University light rail station. Leimomi will be in front of Tacos Chukis at 5:30pm on Nov 1st. It’s located next door to El Centro de la Raza Community Center, where the event takes place. A free chicken mole dinner, children’s activities, live music, raffles and a presentation are included!!
Here is a bit of information about the Mexican tradition of remembrance:
