National progressive magazine credits New Trier Neighbors as first on the scene of the nationwide parents' rights movement! 

Mother Jones Magazine, an icon to America's progressive Left for two generations, gives credit to Parents of New Trier in 2017 -- which evolved into New Trier Neighbors later that year -- for being the first to identify the politicized treatment of topics like race, sexuality, and gender in the classroom. Click here to read "The Right-Wing Attack on Public Education Began in One Elite Illinois High School."

New Trier Neighbors appreciates the national recognition that many of us here in the New Trier area identified early on these divisive ideological issues that thankfully are now being addressed by newly energized, informed, and empowered parents across the country.

Winnetka’s D36 proposes another referendum. Will they succeed this time?

Winnetka D36 is proposing a $60 million referendum on the ballot November 8, emphasizing the need for safety updates to its buildings. In 2019 they failed to pass a $90 million referendum by a 2 to 1 vote.   

The proponents of the referendum say the district’s buildings are run-down and need updates such as new HVAC systems, “secure entry vestibules”, plumbing and electric repairs, increased access for disabled students, and a lunchroom and more classrooms at two elementary schools.  

However, critics say expanding facilities amid significant enrollment decline is unnecessary, in addition to the fact that the district collects an excess of $3-4 million in property taxes each year that could be put towards needed repairs to facilities.  Critics also point out that the district should prioritize addressing Winnetka’s declining test scores, which were an issue even before the pandemic.

The referendum, if passed, would add an estimated $929 in additional property taxes for every $1 million worth of home value.  

Will voters approve increased property taxes when Illinois already has some of the highest property taxes in the nation on top of an increasingly economically uncertain national environment? We’ll find out November 8.
