Artificial Intelligence in Practice Across the CSU

This Voices blog, authored by Dr. Thad Nodine, takes a look at the CSU’s new AI Commons and what it offers students, faculty, and staff in its first year. Rather than selling a vision of AI as a 'cure all,' it walks through tools, trainings, and policies now in place, where the support feels strong, and where important questions and gaps remain. Dr. Nodine also reflects on his own experiment using generative AI to write about AI, offering a candid reminder that understanding and judgment still come from human reading, thinking, and decision making.

New Professional Learning Director: Welcome Iqbal Atwal!

Iqbal Atwal is the director of learning at EdInsights, which facilitates the Network, where he leads and supports professional learning initiatives designed to strengthen institutional capacity, improve student transitions, and advance equity-focused practices across California’s education systems. A first-generation college graduate and the son of immigrant parents, Iqbal’s commitment to educational equity is grounded in lived experience and in positions held across all four public education systems in California—K–12, community colleges, the California State University, and the University of California.

Before joining EdInsights, he served as director and principal investigator for two U.S. Department of Education HSI-STEM grants at California State University, Stanislaus, where he led multimillion-dollar initiatives that improved STEM retention, strengthened community college transfer pathways, expanded workforce preparation, and advanced institutional practices that support first-generation and low-income students. His earlier work at UC Merced focused on graduate recruitment, student success, and high-impact programming for diverse student populations. Iqbal holds a master's of public administration and a bachelor’s degree in political science from CSU Stanislaus. His professional interests include strengthening student sense of belonging, improving educational transitions, building career pathways, and supporting evidence-based institutional improvement. Outside of work, he enjoys playing basketball, exploring the state of California, and spending time with his family.

Middle Leadership Academy Applications Open this February!

As applications for the Middle Leadership Academy prepare to open on February 11, this short video introduces how the Academy is designed to support campus teams and what participants can expect from the experience. Drawing on findings from previously published Academy impact briefs, the panel discusses the kinds of leadership development, collaboration, and campus level change that have emerged over time, as well as the conditions that help those efforts take root. For campus teams considering applying, the video offers useful context for how the Academy is structured and how it has supported equitable student success work across the CSU.
