Walk for a Cause

MaGrann Assciates' Director of Business Development, Mike Brown began a Walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research in 2009, in honor of his brother-in-law. In 2009 Steve "Doc" Charton was diagnosed with one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the U.S. and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths. In an effort to support his brother-in-law and help change the face of pancreatic cancer, Mike and his family organized the first walk/run.

Though "Doc" lost his battle with cancer on September 1, 2012, the event has continued in his memory. 2014 marked the 6th annual Pennsauken Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk and was incredibly successful. With over 400 participants, the Walk raised almost $55,000.

"Raising money for pancreatic cancer research is the best way I can imagine to honor the memory of Steve and to support the thousands of individuals who wage a battle against this terrible disease," said Mike.

The MarCom (Marketing Communications) Awards is an international creative competition for any individual or company involved with a print, visual, audio or web material. A recipient at this year's awards was EfficiencyCrafted, a program sponsored by AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas of Ohio designed and managed by MaGrann Associates together with our marketing development partner, Burkholder Flint. EfficiencyCrafted provides support for builders to use advanced construction practices to meet a higher standard of energy performance, as measured by the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index and the ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Program.

One of the largest competitions of its kind, this year's MarCom Awards drew over 6,500 entries from the U.S., Canada and 15 other countries.  Judges are industry professionals and the entrants come from Fortune 50 companies and some of the top business and communication firms in the world.

Of the thousands of entries, about 17% won platinum, 23% won gold and 10% received honorable mentions. EfficiencyCrafted won two awards: one for its
website winning Platinum in the Website/Informational category and one for its branding campaign, winning Gold in the Marketing/Promo Campaign/Branding Refresh category.

Company Name: E-Built, LLC

Year Founded: 2007

Where Are You Located? Philadelphia, PA

Purpose of Company: E-Built is the construction arm of a real estate development group. We started as developers focusing on green practices and realized there weren't many contractors focused on green principles at the time (2008-2009). What started out with a carpentry division grew to doing green roofs and eventually into construction management (CM). Now, we build our own development projects and do CM work for other clients.

What Makes You Different? E-Built is focused on green principles (E is for environment). I worked in energy efficiency before as an analyst for an electric utility, teaching companies how to cycle their power plants more efficiently. I also have a construction background and am a realtor so the 2 meshed together. The energy background is what really makes us unique. Three of the people within our company have master's degrees and two are in sustainable building. We're an educated group for a CM firm. It's a boutique construction company that works primarily on projects in the $1-5 million range and we are structured to fulfill the needs of urban developers (multi-family, single family, commercial, retail).

Who Are Your Clients? Developers and property owners of varying sizes (from small firms to large developers, commercial and retail clients, and publicly traded clients) and we also build our own projects.

What is One of Your Proudest Accomplishments? We are very proud of the Icehouse project. That's one of our signature projects. The project started out with some green features and we quickly moved to 'ok we're going to get this thing LEED certified'. In the end we achieved LEED Platinum status. The 1st phase was completed in 2010. It was the first ever LEED Platinum multi-family low rise project in Philadelphia history, with 10 LEED Platinum units. We are very proud of another project we completed this past year, Wharton Street Lofts. Through our coordination, the project was awarded a SMIP (Stormwater Management Infrastructure Program) grant in 2014. The SMIP grant is a joint program between PIDC and the Philadelphia Water Dept. At Wharton Street we built a 14,000 square foot green roof - one of the largest green roofs in Philadelphia and turned what was an almost 40,000 sq. ft. impervious property into a property who's stormwater was 100% managed. The developers on the project matched the grant money awarded in order to build a playground for Jackson Elementary School. The ability to give back is one of our greatest achievements. By raising the funds needed, we were able to turn a blank concrete play space into an impressive playground.

Community involvement: Before the Jackson playground, we built a $300,000 playground at Bayard Taylor in North Philadelphia for the Hamels Foundation in 2012. This project is what started our exploration into playgrounds. Based on this experience, Jackson recruited us to help get theirs up and running.

Most Recent Project: We just broke ground on Phase III of Icehouse in Fishtown, which we'll be working with MaGrann on. We also have an 11 unit single family development on Moyer St. Court across the street.

What drew you to MaGrann? Our former provider moved away from the business and we were aware of MaGrann's reputation. Considering Phase III, I approached Laila Reilly (MaGrann Client Relations Manager). I also know MaGrann has a great commitment to the Building Industry Association (BIA), which is an organization I'm heavily involved with so when it was time to consider a provider for Phase III, MaGrann was an easy choice.

Advice to Potential Home Buyer: My advice would be that buying a home is probably the largest investment that you'll make in a lifetime and you should consider the energy efficiency of that home. Energy efficiency is almost always one of the top two things you consider when you buy a new car, so why not for a home? You are going to own a home a lot longer than car! I would say it should be in the top three criteria to research when shopping for a new home.

The least efficient apartment community may spend $165,000 more in annual energy costs than a comparable community operating the most efficiently, according to a recent report issued by Fannie Mae...

The report gets more interesting. A 100,000 square foot property spends on average $125,000 on energy and $33,000 on water annually. Assuming a 6 percent cap rate, if this community saved 15 percent on energy and water costs, it would increase asset value by nearly $400,000.

The Annual Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance (KEEA) Conference was held in Harrisburg, PA on November 13.

Keynote speaker, Gene Rodrigues (right) with MaGrann CFO/COO Rich Selverian (left).

With almost 200 attendees, 12 sponsors and 15 exhibitors. This leading regional energy conference celebrated the progress of energy efficiency in Pennsylvania. Keynote Speaker Gene Rodrigues of ICF International gave a rousing presentation on The Utility of the Future. Gene discussed how public policy is changing, utilities are redefining themselves, infrastructure and technology are making tremendous advances, and consumers are no longer settling for yesterday's level of service. Rodrigues showed how these dynamics are converging to create fascinating opportunities for energy efficiency.

MaGrann CFO/COO Rich Selverian is also the President of the Board of KEEA and kicked off the conference with opening comments. "We, at KEEA, want to partner with utilities in our state to shape the future in a way that maximizes returns from efficiency for all constituents and look forward to the day that Pennsylvania is the national leader in energy efficiency," he said.

MaGrann's Vice President of Program Development, Ben Adams was also in attendance, leading a session on "Gas & Electric Energy Efficiency Program Integration" and why it makes sense for the cost effectiveness, energy impact and customer satisfaction of whole-building programs.

KEEA was founded in 2007 by energy efficiency and clean energy professionals. One of the early initiatives of the organization was to support the passage of Act 129 -

Exhibit space at KEEA

Pennsylvania's landmark utility energy efficiency law that helps electric ratepayers around the state take advantage of energy efficiency programs that suit their buildings. Act 129 was passed in 2008 and has been a great success. Phase II is underway and the launching of a Phase III is soon to be announced.
