New Visions Instructional Routines for Social Studies
At NVPS, our goal is to nurture students who can engage in independent learning by
internalizing strategies to tackle familiar and unfamiliar tasks and texts.
To facilitate the development of historical thinking skills and independence, we created instructional routines that can be used with documents and topics throughout the social studies curriculum to teach students skills like contextualization, sourcing, and connecting cause and effect. The routines come with presentations, templates, mini-lessons, and explanatory features for teachers.
We hope that by using these routines repeatedly throughout the year and by removing scaffolding as the year progresses that students will develop independence with these skills.
